Lady Texan basketball ready to roll

The Wimberley High School girls basketball team this year will be made up mostly of players from last year’s junior varsity according to coach Ted Dydalowicz. “We graduated 12 seniors from last years team, including four starters. That included Jacqueline Johnson, our top player who was also our captain, leading scorer and top rebounder. So, we don’t have a lot of experience with the only starter from last year’s main five being point guard Rhyn Masur.”

In the three games played so far this year, the Texans have gone 2-1 with a 60-34 season-opening loss to Austin Anderson, a 59-56 win over Seguin and a 44-25 victory against Johnson City. In the Seguin game, the Texans played tough but fell behind then fought back for the win. This Friday night, the Texans will travel to Jordantown for a 6:30 game. Then, on Monday, January 19, they host Blanco at 2:30.

The November 27 game began a stretch of eleven away competitions involving single games and tournament play that will take up much of December. According to Coach Dydalowicz, “A lot of that involves tournaments. But, I’ve always liked to play on the road more than at home because it prepares our players for hostile situations. I know it affects a lot of people who want to see more home games, but I like the challenge of playing on the road.”

The experienced coach lists his lineup for the early season to include Rhyn Masur and Chloe Garrison as guards, with McKenna Ward, Mattie Martin and Carson Crowder at post positions. With the overall lack of experience, Dydalowicz expects others to get plenty of court time. “I kind of run a traditional center at times and that would be senior Tamara Rodriguez.”

“Our number one reserve is Carson Crowder who is a steady player just coming off last year’s freshmen team. She’s done really well because she works so hard.”
