Hat tricks propel both soccer teams

Both the boys’ and girls’ soccer programs only had one game last week due to the inclement weather, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Gage Weaver helped the Texans reclaim the lead versus Great Hearts Northern Oaks with two goals in the first half before finishing off the hat trick in the second half on the way to a 5-1 victory for the Texans.

Even though Weaver scored three goals, the most eye-catching goal goes to Dail Hernandez.

“Our right back Finn Mignerey put a beautiful 30-yard ball from wide diagonally through the box where Dial was playing,” Boys’ Soccer Coach Ramez Antoun said. “He fit it in perfectly, and Dail attacked the ball, got his head on it and drove it into the net... It could not have been a more text book header from the service to the finish.”

Also, for the second game in a row, defender Brandon Carrillo came forward and scored a goal for the Texans.

For the Lady Texans, Emily Thames added a bit of flair. She had a hat trick in the first district game more than a week ago, but hadn’t scored at all in the first half versus the girls’ squad from Great Hearts Northern Oaks.

“She’s now a marked player,” Girls’ Soccer Coach Brinton Nute said. “She had at least two defenders on her, and we had a conversation about her being frustrated that she hadn’t scored. I told her to be patient and to keep doing the right things.”

In a span of less than 10 minutes in the second half, Thames scored three goals for one of the quickest hat tricks possible on the way to a 8-3 victory for the Lady Texans. She’s now scored three goals in each of the first two district games.

“It was bang, bang, bang,” Nute said. “People are starting to take notice of her. She feels the pressure on her, but she still delivers regularly.”

Izzy Frank scored two goals and Ella Sandoval, Haley Lopez and Selah Jones scored one goal apiece.

Both teams were scheduled to play Boerne on Friday, but the games were postponed until Monday night due to the weather. The Texans lost to Boerne 10-2 while the Lady Texans fought Boerne to a 4-4 tie. Both teams will play Fredericksburg on Friday with the girls’ team playing at home starting at 6 p.m and the boys’ team on the road starting at 7 p.m.
