Girls soccer wins big at Salado

The Wimberley Texan girls’ soccer team played in the Salado Eagles tournament on January 17-19 and came away a winner in all four games. In the first contest on Thursday, they easily dispatched IDEA-Montopolis 9-0. The next day, the Texans blanked Glenn 4-0 to move into the winner’s bracket. What had seemed like a possible tougher foe later that afternoon turned into an easy 6-0 win over Burnet. Senior keeper Casey Crawford continued her stellar record in goal.

But last Saturday’s game matched Wimberley and tournament host Salado. Locked in a 0-0 defense battle after regulation time, the teams went into a penalty kick shoot-out which the Texans won five goals to four. With the win, the Texans upped their season record to 12-1.

This week, Coach Brinton Nute’s team will host Salado on Friday, January 25 for a 7:00 game. The Eagles should provide tougher competition for the Texans as their record stands 7-3-1 including a 4-2 win over Glenn and a one-goal loss to Pleasanton. However, led by the scoring duo of senior strikers Avery Biggers and Holly Harwood, the Texans have become a scoring powerhouse. Fronted by an aggressive wall on defense, goalkeeper Casey Crawford has allowed only six goals so far this season.

Always looming on the horizon is the district schedule, especially since the Texans will open that phase of the season on February 25 against Fredericksburg on the Battling Billies’ home field.
