Girls’ soccer hits injury snag

The Wimberley Lady Texan soccer team has met a foe that has beaten many teams, but this opponent isn’t on the field. In fact, it is keeping players off the field. The injury bug has bitten the team.

“We have six injuries right now,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “Four of our injuries are to starters. We are hoping to get one back in the next week and then possibly a few more by the playoffs.“

Wimberley’s top goal scorer Holly Harwood is currently on the injury list making scoring even tougher. For some games, Wimberley hasn’t had any players available for substitutions requiring those on the field to play all the way through the game.

“Holly has been one of our main goal threats this year,” Nute said. “We’ve struggled without her. We haven’t been able to create much offense. And now we don’t’ have the subs to rotate in. It is like a war of attrition. Right now we have zero subs, but we promoted two junior varsity players to give us a bit of depth.”

Wimberley lost 1-0 to Fredericksburg before falling 6-0 to Boerne on Friday night. “We knew Boerne was a tough team, because they are always good,” Nute said. “We lost two players in the first half and played with no subs, and they passed us into the ground.”

On Tuesday night Wimberley played Canyon Lake before having a bye on Friday. The next game will be played on Tuesday, February 25 at Bandera.
