Girls’ soccer aims for district championship
Wimberley’s strong girls’ team will begin their search for a district championship this Friday against Burnet on the Bulldogs home field with a start time of 7:30. Earlier in the year, the Texans beat Burnet 6-0 but Wimberley coach Brinton Nute warned his team not to take that game as a sign of an easy win in tournament play.
Earlier this week, the Texans played a make-up game against Taylor as a temperature check on how his team is ready for the rigors of tournament competition. “We haven’t yet produced our best effort. We typically start games slowly, but in these games, I’d like to start on the front foot and build a lead.
Nute’s team still needs three starters to get completely recovered from nagging injuries to be at their best. One of the bright signs for the team is the growth of sophomore striker Laysa Molina. “She came off the bench against Bandera last Friday and scored her first goal of the year in district play. She’s worked on her shooting and she’s improved dramatically.” The Texan girls tied that game 3-3 to raise their regular season record to a sparkling 19-3-2 with a district record of 5-2-1.
