Giddings hands Texans first loss

Giddings 63 - Wimberley 13. That statistic pretty much tells everything about Wimberley High School’s away game loss at Giddings last Friday. The loss left the Texans with a 1-1 record as they prepare to host Canyon Lake Friday night in this season’s first home game.

“We made mistakes against a good Giddings team and capitalized on those mistakes,” Wimberley head coach Doug lamented. “When we started to press back, we made mistakes and let the game get away from us.”

Wimberley scored their first touchdown on a pass from quarterback Cooper McCullen to Landon Clewell that covered 73 yards. Moses Wray ploughed through the middle for three yards on the other Wimberley touchdown.

Evaluating his team’s mood at this week’s practices, Warren commented, “Well, it really didn’t feel good! But, actually, the only thing hurt is to our pride. I told the team not to worry on week two but to look down the road to upcoming games. We just don’t want to be in the same spot at week five or six!”

The Texans played last week with three starters out with sickness or injury. But, Warren hopes defensive end Trey Manning, offensive guard Angel Alvarez and wide receiver Caleb Cervenka will be ready to play against Canyon Lake this week.

“No excuses, but this week we go against Canyon Lake in what people call ‘The Battle of the Backbone’ because only 12 miles separate our schools. Canyon Lake is always well-coached and it’s always a tough game. So far, they’re 2-0 this season.

Running out of the slot-T formation, Canyon Lake will present a completely new challenge to the Texan defense. A ground-oriented team, the Hawks use their size to slow the game and keep the ball away from their opponents.

After one pre-season scrimmage and two back to back games on the road, Warren admits it will feel good to play at home with a crowd of Wimberley Texan fans cheering in the stands.
