Football season ends in the playoffs

The Wimberley Texan football season came to an end with a first round playoff loss to the Crystal City Javelinas 26-21.

Wimberley scored first to go up 7-0 in the first quarter on a 10-yard run from Guy Kypuros, but it would be their only lead of the ball game. Crystal City came back and scored on the ensuing drive, but failed on the two-point conversion, as the team did not have a kicker. The Texans ended the first quarter with a 7-6 lead.

Early in the second quarter, the Texans drove to the two yardline. On fourth down, Wimberley ran a quarterback run to the right with Colby Boyle only to be stopped short of the goal line.

What looked like a game changing play turned out to have minimal damage as about a minute later Wimberley recovered a fumble from Crystal City at the 43-yard line. But it didn’t take long for Crystal City make a splash play. The first play of the Texans offensive drive was intercepted and returned for a 63-yard touchdown.

After the two-point conversion, the score was 14-7. With just seconds left in the first half, Crystal City was able to punch another score in to extend their lead to 20-7 at half time.

Wimberley was able to score in the third quarter on a 33-yard run by Kypuros for his second touchdown of the game to narrow the lead to seven points, but Crystal City immediately responded again with a touchdown. After another failed two-point conversion, the score was 26-14 with 10 minutes left in the game.

It appeared the Texans chances were dwindling, but the defense held strong. With six minutes remaining, the Texans’ Landon Clewell returned a punt 72-yards for a touchdown to bring the score to 26-21.

Crystal City marched the length of the field and turned the ball over to Wimberley with a little more than minute and a half remaining in the game. After showing some signs of life by moving the ball near midfield, a set of penalties backed Wimberley up. A last second heave downfield for Caleb Cervenka fell to the turf on fourth down drawing a close to the Texans season.
