Football falls to Austin Regents

The Wimberley Texans football team gets a bye in this week before next week’s homecoming game against Eastside Memorial in the first of five district games. The View sat down this week with Texan head Coach Doug Warren to get his comments on last week’s game against Austin Regents and to take a peek at the team’s homecoming game prospects against Eastside Memorial on October 12.

Just as the Wimberley Texans were about to take the field against Austin Regents last Friday, pouring rain soaked the field and made the grass and dirt surface tough to play on. Those tough conditions helped to send the Texans to a 48-13 loss and dropped their season record to 1-4.

“We had too many turnovers--many in their territory” coach Warner related about the Austin Regents game. “We’ve talked all season with our team about the fumbling problem. But, whether it’s a wet field or a dry field doesn’t matter because we still can’t make those mistakes and expect to win.”

“Those fumbles put us behind the eight ball in a hurry. We also gave up two early interceptions along with those fumbles. Then, we got into their red zone several times. But when we got down there, a combination such as missed assignments, a wrong check---it wasn’t really one person--just a combination of things that kept us from executing. We just failed to execute in the red zone and that cost us the game.”

Asked “What now?” Warner answered, “We’re pretty banged up right now with some injuries that we’ll give a chance to heal. The list is long, but eight guys who play a bunch for us are hurt. For example, Christian Marshall, a wide receiver and defensive back, has a broken collar bone so he’s probably out for the season. I’m hoping to get other hurt players back in time for district play.”

On a positive note, Warner said, “I thought that our offensive line was more physical in this game. In fact, we were more physical all over as a team. That’s something we’ve been working on all season.”

Turning to the upcoming home game against East Memorial on October 12, Warner offered some comments. “We don’t know a whole lot about Eastside. This will be the first time we’ve ever played them. They were moved into our district this year. It’s the first district game so everybody’s slate is wiped clean, but I don’t think those teams in our district are any tougher than what we’ve met so far this year. Hopefully our tough pre-district schedule has prepared us for the rest of the season.
