Football dominates Hondo in Area Finals

The first battle on the field for an Area championship was won early last week. The Wimberley Texans set the tone quickly on the way to a 54-14 victory over the Hondo Owls.

“We took the football first, and we hit a big pass early,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said. “We were able to punch it in, but it only took five or six plays to score. Then our defense got them off the field quickly on the next drive, and those two series really established the game quickly on offense and defense.”

That first touchdown was a 16-yard run from Moses Wray just two minutes and three seconds into the game. It was the first of three touchdowns he would score, two on the ground and one through the air.

While the Texan offense is often predicated on establishing the run, quarterback Matt Tippie has also put up some eye-popping statistics. He threw for 329 yards and completed five touchdown passes to four different receivers. The first touchdown pass came near the end of the first quarter. It was a 36-yard pass to Ty Pruett to make the game 14-0 and was the first of two touchdown catches for Pruett on the way to having a huge day with 143 yards on nine receptions.

“It continued through the whole game,” Warren said. “We were able to really establish a good ground game, and we were able to move the ball. We pretty much did what we wanted to do with it.”

That was evident as Wimberley scored 30 points in the first half while shutting out the Owls.

“We had some great contributions on defense from Dylan Kincaid, Josh Prado and Nova Rankin... Really, it was just a good performance by our defense overall,” Warren said.

The defense forced two interceptions and had five sacks on the evening. After shutting out the Owls in the first half, Wimberley allowed one long touchdown pass in the third quarter and a final touchdown just before time ran off the clock to end the game. Overall, it was a stellar performance from the “Code Red” defense.

NEXT UP: SINTON PIRATES

The victory over the Owls sets up a familiar matchup in the 4A Regional Finals. The Sinton Pirates are 8-3 on the season and are coming off a 28-11 victory over Giddings. They do not have any of the same opponents this year as the Texans, but that doesn’t mean the two teams don’t know each other. Wimberley will face the Sinton Pirates in the playoffs for the fifth time in the last eight years.

“They are always a powerhouse in that region,” Warren said. “What you are going to see is a very athletic team with a dynamic quarterback and a dynamic running back.”

Those players would be twin brothers Rylan and Rene Galvin.

“They have the capability to throw the football, but they want to be physical and run it with those guys,” Warren said. “What they really like to do is spread you out and then run right at you.”

Rene is the quarterback. He has 901 yards passing, eight touchdowns and four interceptions on the season. But he has also added 829 yards rushing and 17 more touchdowns on the ground.

Rylan is the running back, and when he touches the ball defenses better be on their toes. In only nine games this year, Rylan has 1,529 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground while averaging 9.9 yards per carry.

“(Our defense) is going to have to trust their reads this week, and really focus on doing what they have been coached to do,” Warren said. “…We’ll look at their top plays, their favorites, and you’ve got to be able to take one of those things away. If running the quarterback is their favorite, you have to take something like that away. Once you can take something away from them, they start to go away from their bread and butter and that is something we look to do on a week-toweek basis.”

The Sinton defense allowed 23.5 points per game this season averaging about one interception and two sacks per game. They haven’t given up more than 11 points (last week versus Giddings) in the last four games. The Pirates tend to play a three-man defensive front and have a young but experienced defensive line.

The defense is led by linebacker Jonathon Morin, who leads the team in tackles, is second in sacks and has played in every game this season. The secondary is led by senior Chris Burk Jr. who has five interceptions.

“We have to be able to establish the run,” Warren said. “We have been able to do that the last several games. The other thing is for us to take what they will give us. The film shows us they will give us short routes. They want to take away the deep shots, so if they will give you short underneath stuff let’s take that all night long. That is something we have done a pretty good job with all year long. If someone gives us something we’ll take it.”

The game will be played on Saturday, November 28 at 2 p.m. at Judson High School in Converse.
