Decorated senior class finishes season with third trip to State Semifinals

With their loss to the No. 1 ranked Carthage Bulldogs in the State-Semifinal round, the Wimberley Texans football season came to an emotional end to what has been a rollercoaster season for players, coaches, and fans alike.

Following the losing 38-7 loss, Wimberley finishes the season at 12-4.

Receiving the ball to start the game, Carthage soon found themselves trapped on their own one-yard line.

Facing 4th down on their own four-yard line, the Bulldogs shocked the stadium by going for it. The Code Red Defense stuffed the Bulldogs to get the ball back with incredible field position.

However, the Texans were unable to score off of the 4th down stop as Carthage pushed back and stopped Wimberley on fourth and goal.

The Bulldogs proceeded to drive 99-yards for the score as running back Mason Courtney scored from two yards out to take the first lead of the game at 7-0.

After the score, the two defenses dug their heels into the ground as the teams’ defenses held the other’s offense from scoring.

The Bulldogs struck again as quarterback Kai Horton hit Courtney for a 73-yard touchdown pass as Carthage extended the lead at 14-0.

Carthage tacked on a 29-field goal before the halftime buzzer as the Bulldogs extended the lead at 17-0.

Receiving the ball to start the second half, Wimberley struck back as quarterback Matthew Tippie hit Ty Pruett for the 44-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead down at 17-7.

The Texans then surprised Carthage with a successful onside kick by Jack Bruner, which was recovered.

But the Wimberley offensive failed to get the first down and the Texans were forced to punt. On the ensuing punt, the snap sailed past the punter and the ball was downed deep into Wimberley territory.

Carthage converted the Texans’ bad snap into points as Horton found Craig McNew for the 10- yard score as the Bulldogs extended the lead at 24-7.

Following another Wimberley punt, the Bulldogs struck again as Horton found McNew again and added to the 31-7 lead.

The Bulldogs added on the final score as Horton completed his fourth touchdown pass to Montrel Hatten to make the final score 38-7.

Though the season has come to an emotional end, the 2020 season will be one no one fans will ever forget.

The COVID-19 pandemic had put a severe pause on the 2020 Texas High School Football season during the summer which caused some to fear the season was going to be canceled.

But through fortunate circumstances, the Texans were able to play a full season starting off the season against rival Canyon Lake.

But the season was not without its pitfalls, which included a couple of cancellations by teams and last-minute game changes. That included a game scheduled at the last minute against Kennedale, which gave the Texans their last game in Texan Stadium and the first time the team had been home in nearly a month.

The senior class of 2021 will leave Wimberley with one of the best records during their four years which include three appearances in the State-Semifinals and one State Championship Game appearance.

The 2021 class will finish with a record of 41-17 over the last four seasons.
