Cuero rolls, Texans ready for playoffs

On a cold and windy Friday night last week, the Wimberley Texans hosted traditional rival Cuero for the last game of the regular season. Unfortunately, they ran into a dynamo named Jordan Whittington who scored on the first play he carried the ball in the first quarter then continued to lead the Gobblers to a 73-24 rout of the home team Texans.

However, Wimberley already had qualified for post-season district play and will meet Crystal City this Friday evening at South San Antonio Bobcat Stadium at 7:30.

“I thought we’d do better than what we showed last Friday, but we’re in knockout round now so we’ve got a ‘one game at a time’ season,” Coach Warren said. “Either we win every Friday or we stay home until next year.”

Asked when he thought the Cuero game got pretty much out of reach, the veteran coach answered quickly, “Pretty much after the first quarter when we were already down 28-0! Spot a team like Cuero 28 points, and you’re not going to win the game.” After that first quarter, the Gobblers continued piling on points until the score stood 49-7 at halftime then 73-7 after three quarters.

Returning to the game against Cuero, Coach Warren brushed aside excuses for the loss. “The weather didn’t really affect anything last Friday night. It was chilly but not real cold, just good Texas football weather. Their big line controlled the play on offense and on defense. When a team does that, they can pretty much do what they want. And Cuero did! I think they’ve got a good chance to go deep into the playoffs.”

About this Friday’s district game against Crystal City, Warner commented, “This is the first time we’ve ever played Crystal City. At this point, we don’t know a lot about the Crystal City team. But we expect they’ll stick to just plain good Texas football with more runs than passes.”

For the post-season games, Texan coaches will move junior varsity team players up to dress with the varsity so they can get the experience of the practices, the game and the atmosphere of post-season play.

‘Kennedy Strange had a good night at wide-receiver and Guy Kypuros again ran the ball well,” Warren took the chance to praise two Texan players for solid play last week. The future looks good for Texan football as the junior varsity team finished the season with winning record while the freshmen squad went 8-1-1 during their highly successful season.
