Cross Country at State

The Wimberley Texan Girls’ Cross Country team finished as the 10th place team at the UIL 4A Texas State Cross County Championship meet held last week.

This was only the second time Wimberley had sent an entire cross country team to State and the first time in more than 15 years.

“It was a totally different experience,” Head Coach Lacey Lambert said. “We have taken many individuals (to the State Championship), but none of the girls that competed on this team had ever qualified. The experience of sharing it with your team is so much more exciting. They are already talking about who is coming up next year and how we are only losing two runners. We are hoping to get to where cross country is like many other sports in this town and that this type of success is normal for the program.”

Jasmine Cante was the senior leader of the team, and she was the first to cross the finish line. Cante placed 54th finishing with a time of 13 minutes, 9.97 seconds.

“She has been the go getter for this group,” Lambert said. “…She brought a lot to these girls and was a motivator. I think that was something we have been missing, a group of girls that are excited about running, and she really got this team together and gave them the motivation to do this together.”

Sophomore Julia Rennels was the next finisher for Wimberley placing 65th with a time of 13 minutes, 20.31 seconds. She was followed by freshman Madison Anderson who finished in 77th place with a time of 13 minutes, 29.79 seconds. Junior Haley Hall followed in 88th place with a time of 13 minutes, 36.39 seconds. She is expected to continue to push the team forward as one of the leaders next season.

“Running is her sport,” Lambert said. “Her knowledge and excitement about running really brought this group together. We have three freshmen and a sophomore that we are looking to build this program on… She was able to keep those girls excited about running, and we’re all looking forward to next year.”

Freshman Isabella Franchione placed 92nd for Wimberley with a time of 13 minutes 39.72 seconds rounding out the five fastest runners for the team, which are the runners that are scored for team standings. Wimberley’s average team time was 13 minutes, 27.24 seconds.

Senior Sunny Jones finished 117th with a time of 14 minutes, 58.87 seconds.

“She did not run last year as a junior and came back as a senior,” Lambert said. “That is really tough. She has been a consistent runner all year long… I know she was using this as a bit of preconditioning for soccer season, but because she is such a competitor she went out to compete and she has done that all year.”

Rounding out the team for Wimberley was Risa Espinoza who finished 119th overall with a time of 15 minutes, 17.26 seconds.
