Boys soccer beats Pleasanton

Wimberley Texans soccer boys’ team defeated Pleasanton 3-1 on January 29 while fielding a patchedup squad missing several starting players. Multiple injuries forced coach Ramez Antoun to switch players from their normal positions and use substitutes to fill other slots.

Just three minutes into last Friday’s boys’ soccer game against Pleasanton, right back Remmy Wade lifted a long pass from the right flank which Brian Schmidt intercepted and drove a screamer into the goal for the 1-0 lead. With 6:22 left in the first half, Pleasantville scored on a hard pass that rebounded off a goalpost directly to another Eagle player who slid a soft liner under the Wimberley keeper to tie the game.

At halftime, Texan coach Ramez Antoun told his players, “That first half might have been the best half of soccer you’ve played this year. Keep up the pressure and just keep shooting!”

Although the score stood 1-1 at half time, Wimberley dominated play most of the first half. In the second half, the Texans’ continued to wear down the Eagles. Then, at seven minutes into the second half, Jack Cole intercepted an errant pass, deked one defender then then directed the ball into the net for the 2-1 lead.

The third Texan goal came off a skimmer by Jack Cole from an assist by Elan Hernandez. Leading 3-1 late in the game, coach Antoun then settled his team into a “defend and clear” mode that ran out the clock for the Texans seventh win of the season.

Against LaVernia on February 1, the Texans came back from a 0-2 goal deficit to win 3-2 with three goals in the last 20 minutes of the game. For the first goal of the comeback, Alan Hernandez tucked a scoring shot just inside the right post. Then, Brian Schmidt slid a low pass through to Jack Cole who blasted it through for the tying goal. The winning goal came off a volley from Hernandez to Cole as the Texans celebrated their comeback 3-1 win.

The win brought the Texan boys’ record to 8-5 before a game at Taylor on Tuesday then a home game on Friday, February 8 against IDEA Montopolis. District play begins for the Texans against Fredericksburg on February 12 at the Billies’ home field.
