Boys’ soccer turning the corner

The Wimberley Texan soccer team started district play last week against Fredericksburg and Boerne, two of the top teams in district.

The Texans were able to battle to a 0-0 tie with Fredericksburg on Tuesday of last week.

“That was a really good result for us,” Head Coach Ramez Antoun said. “We played Salado the Friday before that and tied them 2-2, so I think we are turning the corner. We have a young group that is starting to figure out what varsity soccer looks like.”

In a 0-0 tie, it was the defense that stood out in the ball game.

“Our goalkeeper Lucas Craig played a really good match with nine saves,” Antoun said. “Due to injures, we had to move Grant Cole into our central defensive position. He cleaned up the defense and was vocal. He was good with his feet and good with his head. He kept talking and kept people organized. His play went a long ways to making sure Fredericksburg stayed out of our net.”

On Friday, Wimberley matched up with Boerne, and it started out promising.

In the first half, Juan Olmedo scored on a header from an across-the-field pass by Carlos Lopez.

“It was a beautiful crossed ball,” Antoun said. “Carlos crossed it from the right side of the middle of the field in front of the goal, and Juan was able to deflect it off his head and into the goal. It was really pretty.”

Early in the second half, Boerne scored two quick goals. Late in the game, Wimberley had a chance to tie the game up but was unable to connect on a pass to a forward runner.

“We played the two toughest teams in district, and we have a tie and the other we were with them until the end,” Antoun said. “So we’ve now had three consecutive strong showings, so I feel like we are starting to build up some momentum.”

Wimberley plays Canyon Lake on Tuesday night before having a bye on Friday. The next game will be on Tuesday, February 25 at home versus Bandera. The junior varsity will start at 5 p.m. and the varsity starts at 7 p.m.
