Basketball season ends in playoffs

It was a disappointing end to the Wimberley Texans’ basketball season as the Texans fell to the Taylor Ducks 66-57 in the Bi-District round of the playoffs.

Wimberley finishes the season at an even 15-15 record.

From the opening tipoff, both the Texans and the Ducks battled tooth and nail throughout the first quarter. With Houston Murphy leading the team in scoring during the period with six points, the Texans trailed the Ducks 15-12.

Just like the first quarter, the Texans and the Ducks fought hard as the two teams battled for the lead. However, Taylor soon gained control of the game with a combination of good three-point shooting from the Duck’s Ja’Von Carver, who hit three during the period, and some Wimberley offensive turnovers.

As the game went into halftime, Taylor took a 33-22 lead.

The Texans made an offense push during the third quarter after struggling in the first half. Despite scoring two points during the first half, Jaxon Watts stepped up to the plate and scored eight points during the period to help the Texans stay in the game. Heading into the fourth quarter, Wimberley still trailed 47-36.

The fourth quarter saw the Texans make a furious rally to put Wimberley in striking distance. Going on an 8-3 run, the Texans cut the lead down to six and only trailed 50-44 around the middle of the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately for the Texans, it was the closest the team could get to Taylor. The Ducks went on a 6-o run to stop Wimberley’s momentum and effectively shut the door on a Texan comeback now leading 56-44. As the final buzzer sounded, Taylor defeated Wimberley 66-57.

Houston Murphy led the team in scoring and rebounds with 19 points and 11 rebounds to finish the game with a double-double. Jaxon Watts finished second in scoring and rebounds with 13 points, 11 coming in the second half, and seven rebounds.

Though the loss to Taylor was disappointing to the Texans, especially to seniors Colby Boyle, Holden Rushing, Ethan Sturdy and Alex Ursha, a junior heavy team will look to build on this loss towards a postive future.
