Baseball wins two heading to district

The Texan baseball team had a strong showing to finish out the schedule leading up to district play as Wimberley took down two wins last week.

In a game versus on the Austin Wave, the Texans did all the damage needed in one inning scoring nine runs in the third. With Jake Donley on the mound, that was more than enough.

“He was really good,” Head Coach Steve Wisdom said. “He is definitely getting into the form he needs to be in for district play.”

Donley gave up two runs over six innings of play to lead the Texans to a 9-2 victory over the Wave.

On Friday, the bats were needed once again. Wimberley jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first inning, but La Vernia was ready for the challenge. The Bulldogs answered in the second inning with seven runs, but Wisdom elected to leave in starting pitcher Zach Britton. He proved to be up to the challenge by shutting down La Vernia in the third inning

“I was real proud of our kids especially our young pitcher Zach Britton who responded and didn’t get rattled,” Wisdom said. “He got out there and shut them out for the next few innings. To put a six spot up and then lose that lead is crazy, but I was proud of him for sticking in there. He didn’t just fight back, he came back and shut them down. That was real impressive.”

Down 7-6 in the middle of the second inning, the Texans scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning and three more in the third to take a 12-7 lead. They would go on to score at least one run in every inning of the ball game on the way to an 18-8 victory over La Vernia.

“It is awesome,” Wisdom said. “I hope we can repeat it. We have had some really great outings on the mound and our offence didn’t come along with them, so it was really good to see we could put them together at the right time of the year.”

Caleb Cervenka led the Texans with four RBIs in the ball game.

“He has done a great job of batting towards the bottom of the order,” Wisdom said. “He understands what to do down there, so I’m hesitant to move him out of it.”

The game versus La Vernia was the last game before the start of district play. The Texans improved their record to 9-7-1 on the season. Wimberley played on Tuesday night against Llano after the Wimberley View’s time of press. The next game will be at Canyon Lake on Friday at 7 p.m.
