Baseball vying for playoff positioning

After having to replace the entire starting line up and top two pitchers from graduation last year, it would have been easy to say that this was a rebuilding year for the Texan baseball team.

There is just one problem though. The boys on the field didn’t see it that way.

“I’m proud of these guys,” Head Coach Stephen Wisdom said. “Let’s see if we can get these guys to keep surprising people.”

And surprise they have. Wimberley is currently sitting in second place in district with an overall record of 14-9-1. While the odds are long, they still have a sliver of chance to capture a district title. Llano is the only district team to claim victory over the Texans, and they sit in first place with two games remaining to be played this week.

Wimberley is holding up its end of the bargain with back-to-back wins last week to bring their district record to 6-2. After a convincing 10-0 win over Canyon Lake early in the week, a trip to Fredericksburg was in store.

Wimberley came out firing with a three runs in the first inning. Colby Wiegman starting things off with a single, Caleb Cervenka walked and Braden Wallace doubled in a run. Jake Donley would finish off the scoring with a two RBI hit up the middle.

But Fredericksburg wasn’t in for a rout. They scraped together three runs in the bottom of the first inning also to tie the ball game up 3-3. Wimberley jumped right back on the board in the second inning with three base hits by Gage Keate, Craig Symmes and Wiegman. With the bases juiced, Jake Williford, Cervenka and Zach Briton brought them home with RBIs.

Once again, Fredericksburg responded. A double and a homerun in the bottom of the third inning brought the score to 6-5.

“But we fired back,” Wisdom said.

Wiegman would get another base hit. Williford and Wallace walked. Briton and Donley would drive in two more runs before the Texans finished the inning up 9-5 on the way to a 10-6 victory over Fredericksburg, which is the team that knocked Wimberley out of the playoffs in last year’s Regional Quarter Finals on their way to a birth in the state tournament.

While the states were impressive across the board for the Texans. Wiegman’s 5-5 day at the plate stood out the most.

Wimberley played against Bandera on Tuesday after the Wimberley View’s time of press. The next game will be on the road against Boerne on Friday at 7 p.m. to finish out the regular season. Playoffs are expected to begin next week.
