Baseball starts district 1-1

The Wimberley Texan baseball team started off the district season against one of the toughest pitchers around, but they followed up the loss to Llano with a strong victory over Canyon Lake.

Llano’s Justin Low struck out 13 Texans last week on the way to a 6-2 victory. The game started off strong for Wimberley, but they were unable to keep up the momentum.

“They have the one of the best pitchers in the district there,” Head Coach Stephen Wisdom said. “We come out with two outs and no runners on and scored two runs. It was not a great start, but a real good finish to the first inning. I thought we might have had something rolling, but we went goose eggs the rest way.”

Caleb Cervenka and Zach Britton scored in the first inning on RBIs from Jack Meismer and Braden Wallace, but Low settled in and shout of the Texans the rest of the way.

Llano scored three runs in the first and three runs in the second before Wimberley pitcher Jake Donely settled in.

“Their bats came out hot, and they popped around and got a few runs and put us in a bind,” Wisdom said. “We couldn’t answer. Donely started on the bump, and they hit him in those first two innings but he shut them down the rest of the way.”

On Friday, Wimberley got back in the win column with a 6-1 victory over Canyon Lake.

Cervenka, who has been hot enough of late to move from the bottom of the order to the leadoff position, walked to get the ball game rolling. Britton followed with a walk also, and the Texans had two runners on with no outs. After a fly out, Wallace and Craig Symmes each got RBI singles as part of a three run first inning.

Cervenka would go 3-3 on the day with a walk, two runs scored, an RBI and two doubles.

“He was the offensive show,” Wisdom said. “He has responded very well. It is good to see senior leadership like that.”

Britton was on the mount for five and two thirds innings holding Canyon Lake to just one run with eight strikeouts.

Late in the game, Canyon Lake tried to mount a comeback. With the bases loaded in the sixth inning and one run scored with no outs, the Texans were in a jam. A hard line drive hit down the third baseline was snagged by Donely, who touched third base to double up Canyon Lake with two outs. Wimberley was able to get out of the situation nearly unscathed.

The win improved the Texans to 10-8-1 on the season with a 1-1 record in district play.

On Tuesday night, Wimberley played Fredericksburg at home after the Wimberley View’s time of press. The next game will be on Friday in Bandera at 7 p.m.
