Badgers hand Texans first loss

Lampasas Quarterback Ace Whitehead scored a combined five touchdowns en route to a 57-28 loss for the Wimberley Texans.

Wimberley’s record drops to 2-1 while Lampasas improves to 3-0.

“When you play a good quality team like that, your margin of error is really slim,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said.

“I thought we made too many mistakes. We had some chances early to match them, and we just didn’t... We didn’t do a couple of things right and all of a sudden it kind of slipped away from us. The kids fought hard, hung in there, kept battling, and I was proud of them for that.”

“Like I told them,” Warren continued. “We play good people for a reason to see where we are at. We are not where we want to be, and we’ve still got a long way to go to get there. We are going to work on it and get there.”

After the Wimberley offense went three and out on their first drive, Lampasas quickly responded with a touchdown as Whitehead found Lane Haviland for the 16-yard touchdown pass to quickly go up 7-0.

Despite the Texan offense having to punt the following drive, the Texan defense held off the Badger offense and was able to force Lampasas to punt.

Wimberley couldn’t get the offense into motion and were forced to punt for the third time in the game. This led to another score from Lampasas as Whitehead found Michael Murray Jr. for the 52-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 14-0.

The Texans finally found some traction on offense after Matthew Tippie hit Christian Marshall on a 64-yard pass to put Wimberley on the four-yard line.

But a tipped pass turned into an interception on third and goal and ended the scoring opportunity.

The Texan defense held off Lampasas once more to force another punt right before the end of the 1st quarter.

After another Wimberley punt, Lampasas scored from 40 yards out when Case Brister took the ball to the house on 3rd and one to extend the lead at 22-0 following a controversial two point conversion.

The Texans offense finally broke through the stingy Badger defense when junior running back Moses Wray ran for a 47-yard touchdown run to cut the lead down to 22-7.

The Badger offense soon responded before Jack Jerome scored from 19 yards out to extend the lead at 29-7.

Not deterred by the Lampasas score, the Texan offense then drove down the field on the Badgers following a series of Lampasas’ flags. After converting on fourth and one, Moses Wray punched in the touchdown from one yard out to cut the lead down to 29-14.

But Badgers snuck in another touchdown before half as Whitehead ran for a 61-yard touchdown run to extend the lead at 36-14.

After the two teams traded punts during the start of the third quarter, Whitehead struck again running for a 51-yard touchdown to put the Badgers up 43-14.

Following another series of punts by both teams, the Wimberley defense forced a turnover and recovered the ball deep in Lampasas territory.

But the Texans were unable to convert the turnover into points after failing to convert on fourth down.

The Badgers responded with a touchdown after stuffing the Texans on fourth down as Whitehead scored from 76 yards out on 4th down to extend the lead at 50-14.

The following series, Tippie found Ty Pruett for the 61 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead down to 50-21.

Lampasas scored a final time after intercepting the ball and turning it into seven points when Peyton Underwood scored a four yard touchdown to make the score 57-21.

Not giving up, the Texans scored the final touchdown of the game when Chris Schatte scored from 20 yards out to make the final score 57-28.

It was a tough night for the Texan offense who struggled with the passing attack. But in a bright spot, the Texan offense was able to run the ball for the highest total of rushing yards all season against a stingy Badger defense.

“If you look at it, the run game has struggled for the first two weeks,” Warren said. “I thought it was better tonight against really the best defensive front we have seen. That says something, so we will put a lot of emphasis on it next week.

“Our passing was a little bit off,” Warren continued. “They had something to do with it, and we had something do with it. But we’ll get better, and we’ll work on it.”

Wimberley comes back home this week as the Texans try to regroup against historical rival Fredericksburg. The Battlin Billies are flying high starting off the season at 3-0 with a high powered offense averaging 51.6 points per game.
