Dorothy is an absolute dream of a dog with a gentle heart and a sweet, funny personality. She’s settling beautifully into foster life — sleeping through the night, keeping her space clean and getting along wonderfully with other dogs. This loving girl adores being around her people and has a soft, affectionate nature that makes her easy to fall for. She also has a playful side—especially when treats are involved. Her tail wags a mile a minute the second she knows a snack is coming.

Dorothy enjoys winding down with some TV time, happily relaxing by your side after a day of companionship and fun. She’s the perfect mix of calm, loving, and a little bit silly—ready to bring joy and warmth to her forever home. Dorothy, a short-coated Chihuahua mix, weighs 10 pounds and is about three years old.

To set up a “meet and greet” with Dorothy, please go to our website wimberleywagrescue.org to fill out an application. There is no obligation to adopt when you submit an application.

According to news from the city of Woodcreek, improvements to western Woodcreek Drive are being discussed. During the April 8 city council meeting, engineering consultants from Freeland-Turk Engineering Group provided an in-depth update on a proposal for improvements. According to the city, the project is “more than a road resurfacing project, the undertaking is a coordinated and comprehensive infrastructure upgrade designed to manage stormwater more effectively and reduce recurring flooding and erosion issues in the area.”

Engineers explained that western Woodcreek Drive, a private roadway, currently experiences drainage deficiencies that can lead to water overtopping the road, deteriorating pavement and contributing to downstream impacts. The proposed improvements “will focus on reshaping roadside drainage, improving culverts and better directing water flow so that runoff is carried safely away from homes and streets.”

Final estimates are being refined and the city is evaluating how to implement the project in a financially responsible way.

Wimberley’s projectART has paired ten local middle- and high-school students with professional artists for their sixth annual projectMENTOR program, a semester-long apprenticeship that concludes with a gallery exhibition of their artwork, SIDExSIDE, opening May 8. A reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at ARTSPACE, 111 River Rd, #100. The exhibit will continue through June 6, and will be open to the public.

The goal of projectMENTOR is to help students understand what it takes to be a professional

artist, not just by learning an artform but by learning the business aspect of the profession. To that end, students experience the creative process from concept to sale. They are coached in assigning value to their work and signing the contracts that allow their art to be shown in a gallery exhibit and potentially sold.

Since December 2025, students in the program have been working on final projects, learning new techniques and the particulars of creating art in a specific medium.

One of them, tenth-grader Kamren has been paired with artist Erica Smith to learn scenic

design. “Together, my mentor Erica and I constructed and painted an eight-foot by eight foot backdrop based on a rendering I painted. I have had a wonderful time discovering more about the backstage world of theatre and ‘moving paint around’ with Erica.”

“The most rewarding part of this experience,” said Smith, “has been getting to know Kamren and exploring the creative process together. We have come up with so many ideas; deciding which ones to prioritize within our limited time has required thoughtful planning. The most challenging part of the program has been narrowing down our project and deciding which ideas we wanted to pursue the most.”

For most artists, being a mentor in this program is about so much more.

“I joined the projectMENTOR program when I realized I had the opportunity to share my skills in set design and scenic art with a student who was eager to learn,” said Smith.

“When I was a theatre student in college, my mentors played a huge role in shaping my path. Participating feels like a meaningful way to give back and support the next generation of creative students.”

For their final project, Kamren and Smith are building an immersive photography set that two

other mentor-mentee pairs will use for their final project.

This year’s projectMENTOR pairs include artist Eric Morales and students Garner and Drew; artist Lydia Johns and Tess; artist David Bisett and students Arthur, Leigh Weinberg and Finley; artist Melanie Levin and Lenora; artist Brian Delano and Cullen; Melanie Machann and Ada; Heather Carter and Dorian; as well as Erica Smith and Kamren.

Through generous donations, projectART was able to provide each pair with the supplies needed to accomplish their projects and mentors received a small stipend for their participation.

The Earth Day celebration held last Saturday at Wimberley United Methodist Church brought together Springtime enthusiasts, Cajun culture, local organizations, UMC’s Green Team and its Methodist Men members to enjoy the season and to further cultivate among Wimberley residents something increasingly more vital and urgent — the stewardship of Earth.

As Zydeco music enlivened the church grounds at the “Pumpkin Patch,” visitors tucked into heaping trays of a Cajun crawfish boil made flavorful with traditional seasonings, smoked sausage and cobbed corn. At the helm of the feast was the self-proclaimed “Resident Cajun,” Jeff Weems. Despite severely injuring his thumb the week before, Weems and his helpers cheerfully greeted guests and loaded up tables with generous portions of the boil and a little “something extra,” or “lagniappe” in Cajun-speak, of green beans spooned directly onto the table.

While guests enjoyed the bounty of the sea, the church’s Green Team and their invited presenters, among them the Hays County Master Naturalists, Keep Wimberley Beautiful, Texas Metal Tanks, Mothering Earth with Salwa Khan and Ecosystem Regeneration Artisans, quietly spoke with visitors about their activities which implicitly recognized the sanctity of the earth — for its embodiment as a sacred, living entity requiring reverence and protection.

Heading up UMC’s Green Team in Wimberley are Sandra Londa and Janyce Sisson. In April 2023, Londa taught a three-session class at the church called “The Theology ofEcology.” It was a class, she said, that she’d developed, refined and updated for 40 years.

After the class was over, Sisson remarked that for the most part, “we have been arrogant toward creation, viewing it as a commodity rather than a gift from the Creator.”

Flanked by Janyce Sisson, left, and Sandra Londa, right, co-directors of the Green Team program is Ornithologist Carrie Bucklin. Photo by Teresa Kendrick

It turns out that responsible stewardship of the earth has always been important in United Methodist Circles, dating back to John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. However, it wasn’t until May 2024, that the UMC as a whole began to take caring for the earth seriously.

According to Londa, every four years the entire church meets to conduct the business of the church in meetings called a General Conference that is attended by delegates from every region and church across the country.

“At the 2024 General Conference, Londa said, “the bishops of the church declared, ‘The planet is in peril,’ and set about updating the church’s books of Social Principles.”

They wrote, “Sustainability is crucial to the development of ecologically sound policies and practices that seek to restore balance to the natural world and end the disruptive relationships between humanity and the rest of God’s creation. We urge United Methodists to adopt sustainable habits and practices, including refraining from overconsumption, repurposing and recycling materials, avoiding products that pollute or otherwise harm the environment, and reducing the carbon footprints of individuals and families by reducing overall reliance on fossil fuels for heat, transportation and other goods.”

Every church, Londa said, “was strongly encouraged to follow these principles and to establish or re-instate a Green Team.”

When the news of this action reached Wimberley, Londa said, “Janyce and I jumped at the opportunity to start a Green Team. We took a week-long training offered by the Board of Discipleship in August 2024. We invited members of the congregation who were interested in any aspect of creation to join the team. On sign-up day, over 25 people joined.”

The Green Team seeks to “restore balance to the natural world and end the disruptive relationships between humanity and the rest of God’s creation.” Photo by Teresa Kendrick

Since then, the Green Team has attended workshops and meetings, held clean-up days for CR 1492, participated in Trunk or Treat at the Square, hosted a Trail of Lights display at Emily Ann and participated in “Plastic-Free July” in 2025.

Months before in April, the team hosted the lecture, “Water Matters,” with Dr. Robert Mace of the Meadows Center at Texas State University. Later in April they held their first Earth Day celebration. The team secured grants for a Bird Viewing Station, or Bird Blind, that was dedicated in September 2025.

Fellow environmental stewards in the community had taken notice. In November, Hays County Master Naturalists named the Green Team a nonprofit partner of the year at their gala in November, which both Londa and Sisson attended.

This year, with help from the Master Naturalists and the Native Plant Society of Texas, the team planted a pollinator garden.

For their next project, the team has enlisted Professor of Ornithology Carrie Bucklin of Texas State University who said, “We're applying for a grant through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Every year TWPD organizes the Great Texas Birding Classic, and a portion of the funds they raise go to grant programs. Texas State is applying for a grant in conjunction with the Green Team and our Research Rangers project to try to enhance the UMC’s bird blind and get it set up as a birding hot spot on what we call the E bird, or Merlin app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.”

“We hope to create a map of the area in which we point out good spots to see certain birds,” Bucklin said. We’ll include information about the church, the Green Team and our Rangers program. And then we hope to establish a bird monitoring project in the Spring with my ornithology students, in conjunction with the Master Naturalists and any public member who uses the app iNaturalist, in which they track birds they see, and when and where they see them.

Evidence of the Green Team’s commitment to avoid products that pollute or otherwise harm the environment at Earth Day were everywhere: boxed waters, aluminum take home cups, water dispensers and the absence of styrofoam and single-use plastics.

“We try to keep things like styrofoam and plastic to a very minimum at church gatherings. We use glasses, regular dishes, forks and knives whenever we can,” said Sisson.

After several visitors stopped at the Green Team table to talk with Londa and Sisson, Londa shared a quote she loves from Thomas Aquinas, inspired by a passage from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible.

“Sacred writings are bound in two volumes — that of creation and that of the Holy Scriptures… Visible creatures are like a book in which we read the knowledge of God. One has every right to call God’s creatures God’s ‘works,’ for they express the divine mind just as effects manifest their cause. ‘The works of the Lord are the words of the Lord.’ (Eccles. 42.15)”

Janyce Sisson demonstrates an unusual

tweeting mechanical bird. Photo by Teresa Kendrick

HDR Engineering held a public meeting last week at the Community Center to discuss water supply, wastewater and flood planning in Hays County, following the area’s rapid growth and evolving environmental challenges of recent years.

Approved by Hays County Commissioners Court in January, the purpose of the study by HDR was to update data from a previous study completed in 2011 and is part of a larger, ongoing effort by the Commissioners Court to manage rapid growth and enhance community infrastructure in the county.

The study’s immediacy is stark. It is based on the projection that Hays County will grow by 480 percent, extreme by any measure, from a county of 280,000 to almost 2 million people. While most of the growth is projected to take place along the I35 corridor, the allocation of water in the area, natural or otherwise, varies significantly.

On hand to introduce the meeting and answer questions was Commissioner Morgan Hammer.

The scope of the project and recent findings were presented by HDR Senior Client Manager, Darren Thompson and Water Resources Project Manager Kelsey Cayeros. Thursday's presentation is one of four meetings that will be held in each of the county precincts.

Forty-seven residents attended the session in Wimberley.

During the slide program, Thompson explained that the country “took a deep dive into different aspects within the county related to water, wastewater and flooding.” Explaining that the effort was an update but with a difference, he said, “We focused on the geography, the growth of the areas, but specific to utilities and cities.”

“Water supply planning,” he explained, “helps identify what is needed because it takes a minimum of 10 years to develop a water supply project.”

In regards to water supply, the study’s process included overviews of area water authorities and groundwater districts to explore how water could be moved around to supply other areas of the county.

Meetings were held with wholesale water providers for the purpose of learning what projects were in play to supply the water needed in the coming years. The localized planning included data from Wimberley Water Supply Corporation and Aqua Texas.

HDR planners asked both companies for data about their customer base — the type and number of customers they had and their respective usage patterns.

Then they turned their questions to the suppliers themselves: What is the amount of water you're producing on a day to day and yearly basis? What is your understanding of your groundwater permits and other supplies from which you draw?

Each company was asked how it planned to meet the needs of the future, when they projected their supply will dry up, and once that happens, how will they solve again? If the strategies they’ve planned include opportunities from other supplies, from conservation and from drought management, how much will it cost to carry that out?

Based on that and other data, HDR planners will build and cost out the complex implementation plans that will tie into regional plans for the purposes of funding.

While the study is in its early stage, final results are expected at the end of its 11-month timeline, due in late November or December.

Residents and officials, according to county leaders, will have opportunities along the way to learn about the study's findings until the final results are complete.

Local businesses are helping the Wimberley Village Library raise funds during April. The Leaning Pear is helping with a coin funnel and roundup option. Restaurant patrons have the opportunity to round up their bill or toss change into a coin funnel when they leave. All funds received go to the Wimberley Village Library Foundation which helps fund improvements.

Recently, the foundation funded 30 new parking spaces and a walkway to Chapel in the Hills, allowing some shared parking for both facilities. Upcoming projects include resurfacing and restriping the older parking lot, adding an outdoor awning and furniture for the outside patio adjacent to the Community Room, and other improvements.

Blanco Brew is also hosting a round-up fundraiser at the register. Customers may round up their purchases and those funds will go directly to the Wimberley Library’s children’s department to support their summer reading programs.

The concept focuses heavily on recycling waste water and capturing stormwater for uses like irrigation, cooling and flushing.

In Wimberley where water supplies are limited and drought-prone, the school has a highly efficient water system. Among other features, it is built to capture rainwater and reuse air-conditioning condensate. Nick Dornak, one of the engineers who designed the school’s water systems will present a talk about the school’s one-water system and lead a tour of its water-conserving features.

The tour will take place Tuesday, April 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Blue Hole Primary School, 15900 Winters Mill Pkwy.
