Wimberley is Listening

Recent events involving a neighbor of 7A Ranch have the Wimberley Valley in the news yet again, for all the wrong reasons. Last week a group of concerned residents and business owners from different backgrounds, industries and political leanings came together to begin to address the issues associated with racism in our community.

Though there is no quick and easy solution, we believe that it is important to begin a process immediately. The first step is to acknowledge that we are an imperfect community, and one that needs to be open to listening to those marginalized voices both in and outside of our Wimberley Valley so that we can begin to create a more welcoming and inclusive village.

Our hope is that this message will signify that acknowledgment and initiate a greater conversation. We can no longer remain silent. We love and are immensely proud of our town, but there is no denying that there are still dark corners where racism and bigotry live. Too often civil rights issues such as these are mistakenly tossed into the political tumbler which, predictably, inhibits thoughtful, meaningful conversation.

Wimberley should not be defined by these recent hateful incidents but until we as a community decide to actively listen to the voices of those who are marginalized and take action together, we will sadly find ourselves perpetually stuck in a society where skin color significantly determines a person’s wellbeing.
