Wimberley library continues to amaze

Letters to the Editor

Despite my familiarity with the Wimberley Village Library, I am continually amazed by the quality and variety of its services. For such a small community, we have a fine Library with an excellent selection of books, books on CD, magazines, DVD’s, and other items for checkout. In addition, the Library provides the community with a copier, fax machine (send and receive), scanning capability, PC’s for public use, a wifi network for in-Library laptop and tablet use, several Notaries Public, books, videos, and local newspapers for sale, and dozens of other services. Programs are available for toddlers to seniors, including Story Time and Wacky Wednesday for the kids and Retirement Planning, Chair Exercise, and Estate Planning for the adults. There are book clubs, D&D clubs (for the teens), a community-use meeting room, and on and on.

This ain’t your grandmother’s library. It also isn’t what it will need to be in the future as the Wimberley area continues to grow and change. Volunteers and paid staff are working constantly to evolve the Library’s offerings to meet these evolving needs. Libraries have become, as one industry source put it, “the University of the People.” It’s a place to meet and learn and communicate, not just some place where you can check out a book or two. If you haven’t availed yourself of this excellent community resource, I urge you to do so.

And, visit www.wimberleylibrary.org. In addition to the online catalog, available online databases and digital libraries (I regularly use Overdrive to check out novels for playback via my phone and car stereo for long-distance drives), you can keep up with what is happening in terms of programs and activities.

One thing that is happening is a fund-raising program leading to expansion and evolution of the facility. We have outgrown the existing facility and will need more room in coming years, plus, we will need to adapt the space to the changing needs of the clientele. The Library District receives one half of 1% from sales tax revenues in the area, and this is barely sufficient to maintain the current facility and services. If we are to grow and evolve, we need more funding, so there is a concerted effort underway to raise funds for this expansion project - not just for the new facilities, but for the furnishings inside and the programs that will be held within. Please consider visiting the website and contributing as you can to this fine community resource. And, if you haven’t already, consider joining the Friends of the Wimberley Village Library and volunteer your time and energy into making ours the Best Little Library in Texas.

Thank you,

Dennis Lee
