LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Opposed to potential changes to Cypress Point entrance

Are you may be aware on September 16, 2020 the City is considering a budget proposal from the road committee to close the front entrance to Cypress Point and open the rear gate for entrance of traffic onto Doolittle Drive thus creating a new road.

This new road construction would:

1. Greatly increase automobile traffic on Doolittle, Jack Miller, Brookhollow, Augusta, and Woodcreek Drives

2. Greatly increase air and car noise pollution

3. Greatly increase road wear & tear on all roads from cut-through traffic on what now is a now a No Outlet street

4. Greatly diminish all Doolittle residents’ property values, as well as unnecessarily creating a permanent nuisance and,

5. Diminish street safety for people who walk, run, or walk their dog(s) on the street

There is already more traffic scheduled to use our streets, the addition of Camp Young Judaea’s new dormitory will mean more automobiles will be traveling on Doolittle and Jack Miller Drives. When the new elementary school opens, we could experience traffic going back-and-forth through Woodcreek, Brookhollow, Jack Miller and Doolittle to Cypress Point residences.

Because of the current conditions the holding pond next to the Cypress Point dam is completely dry so the dam’s not going to burst anytime soon in this long-term drought. At this time, it does not appear necessary to close the front entrance to Cypress Point and build a new exit road.

We are in a deep recession due to the Pandemic, and some of our residents are already having a hard time paying their bills. They certainly do not need more taxes to finance what is now an unnecessary project. If the City already has budgeted funds for this project, those funds should be used to reduce residents’ property taxes to give them a financial break.

Everyone we have talked to is adamantly opposed to this construction project. A public meeting should be held with all council members present and each council person can state their opinion for or against this road proposal, so we know where they and we stand. We suggest having it at Camp Judea at the outdoor pavilion with seats six feet apart.

We want to maintain the residential character of our neighborhood, not have our streets turned into thoroughfare. There’s just no immediately compelling reason for City Council doing this project at this time, when it could reduce residents’ property taxes instead with any excess funds it has on hand!

The City should notify the citizens of Woodcreek in clear and unambiguous language of this proposal and allow citizens to speak at a public forum. Voting actions by the city council members on this subject should be evaluated by the citizens. City Council members who support this construction should not be supported for reelection in November. We encourage the citizens of Woodcreek to voice their concern. Your opinion matters and should not be discounted by those in city government.

Sincerely,

Mike Schneider
