Nurse offers suggestions on keeping virus at bay

Let me begin by stating that my background is public health administration in North Carolina. I was in charge of all communicable diseases among other programs including: pediatrics, adult health programs, geriatrics orthopedics, prenatal clinics and post natal clinics.

I am blessed to live in Wimberley on the river and enjoy all that this wonderful area has to offer. There are a number of vacation rentals on the river in Wimberley. The last several days I have seen these stocked full of people. They are more likely than not here to get out of the big cities with their children and enjoy all the same qualities of Wimberley that we, citizens of Wimberley, enjoy. My concern is that these people are going to our grocery stores, our gas stations, our hardware stores, and any other business that is open. What they carry with them are the germs and possible coronavirus from the cities they left. It’s understandable that they want to limit their exposure by leaving the big cities, what is not acceptable is what they are exposing the citizens of Wimberley to in doing this. I would request the city administrators to close this town to out-of-town visitors for the duration of this coronavirus crisis.

I am fortunate enough to have a second home in the mountains of North Carolina and that town has taken the steps necessary to close off that little tourist haven to outsiders for the duration of this crisis. The local police are stationed at the entrance and exit to the town and travelers must show their identification and where they live. They are told all hotels and summer rentals are closed. Many people like myself have second homes there and second home owners have to agree to going into isolation for 14 days with no trips to the grocery store shops, restaurant pick ups, and gas stations. Police and there are 11 of them in the small town will monitor them if they choose to go to their second home.

This may sound drastic to many, but I assure you that this is one way and an important way to prevent coronavirus from entering Wimberley. It must be noted that many many people can be carriers with no symptoms and never get the virus. Thus, they do not know that they are infecting people. My grave concern if this is not done, that we will have our first and many more cases of coronavirus in the next few weeks.

Sincerely,

Jo Ann Bennett-Cabler, RN,JD
