LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Thank You, Wimberley Volunteer Fire Department

I never thought I’d have to call our volunteer fire department.

But there I was, suddenly realizing my flaming burn pile had ignited the grass in my yard. In seconds, the fire line had burned beyond the reach of my garden hose.

I knew fire would burn my entire yard. Flames were now burning grass in my neighbor’s yard, only yards from bushes and trees and my neighbor’s house.

I called 911.

Minutes later, two firemen came to my rescue, extinguishing the last remaining flames on both lawns.

If larger vegetation had caught fire, our homes could have burned to the ground.

“This is a dangerous time for Wimberley,” said one of the volunteers. “It has been very dry, and dry grass burns fast.”

Although their vintage pumper truck appears to need a new pump engine, our volunteer firemen were undaunted.

“When it’s so dry, we see lots of fires like this, but the Christmas and New Year’s holidays can be really dangerous with fireworks going off on dry grass,” the fireman said.

I’m grateful to the Wimberley Volunteer Fire Department for their quick service.

Your tax dollars at work, they said.
