    REGINALD WILSON PHILLIPS, M.D

Reginald Wilson Phillips, M.D

Reginald Wilson Phillips, M.D. passed away at his home in Wimberley, Texas on September 5, 2021. He was 96 years old. A Memorial Service for our Dad was held on September 13, 2021.

Reginald was born on February 19, 1925 in Weakley County, Tennessee. He graduated from Edwin Denby High School in Detroit in June of 1942. Reginald entered the military after high school. He was stationed at Air Force bases in Texas and Michigan. Reginald served in WWII. Under the GI Bill, he went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In 1947, Reginald graduated with A.B. and M.S. college degrees. He worked as an auto worker, a teacher and at the University of Michigan Hospitals.

While working at the hospital, a co-worker introduced Reginald to Marian Woods, a nurse on the floor. Reginald’s friend Quint was dating Marian’s friend Jackie. The two couples went out together. Reginald and Marian then became a couple. On January 24th, 1953 Reginald and Marian were married at The United Church of Canada in Teeswater, Ontario.

In 1961 Reginald graduated from the University of Michigan as a Medical Doctor in General Practice. He served the Hamburg and Whitmore Lake Communities for 35 years. Reginald developed long standing health care relationships with the people who came to see him. He saw families, children, and their grandparents. Reginald made house calls after work and on the weekends. He served as a civilian doctor for the Army in the National Guard.

Reginald cherished his family, friends and neighbors. He grew up without financial resources. Reginald helped to finance his children’s and grandchildren’s college educations. In 1990 Reginald and Marian retired and moved to Wimberley, Texas. They grew flowers and vegetables in their gardens. Their paper white narcissus, daffodils, irises, lilies and cosmos bloomed. They ate lettuce, Swiss chard, tomatoes, peas and onions from the vegetable garden. Reginald and Marian picked and ate figs from their tree. They saw cardinals, chickadees, blue jays, sparrows and hummingbirds at the bird feeders. As the seasons changed they watched the migrating birds come and eat too. The wrens sang and nested in the bird boxes along the front porch. In their front and back yards they saw baby deer and their families. Generations of deer families grew up in their tree filled backyard.

Reginald researched his family history. He found ancestors that had fought in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Reginald said everyone who has lived should be remembered. Our ancestors were real people with families and dreams for a future like we have today. He was happy to see his son John put his genealogy on his computer for the family to read.

Reginald was preceded by the passing of his wife Marian; his parents Joe Tolie and Nora Kennon Phillips, sister Viola Montene Phillips and brother-in-law Albert Woods. Reginald is survived by his children Carol, Steven and John. Daughters-in-law Marie and Sharon. Grandchildren are Kevin and Michelle Phillips and Jessica and Haley Phillips. Sister-inlaw and brother-in-law are Frances and John Malone.
