Judy Spitzer

August 31, 1935-September 16, 2018

Judith Spitzer (Judy), born August 31, 1935 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, passed away in San Antonio, Texas on September 16, 2018, at the age of 83. She earned a degree in nursing from Milwaukee Hospital and worked as a nurse at the University of Wisconsin Hospital. In 1956 she married James Spitzer, with whom she raised four children, living in several places before settling in Seabrook, Texas. She returned to nursing at Methodist Hospital in Houston, where she worked in the neonatal intensive care unit, and supported Dr. Michael DeBakey in his pioneering heart transplant procedures. Judy was passionate about knitting, quilting, and other crafts; she formed and ran a knitting business, Hill Country Designs, for over 30 years. An excellent cook and baker, she also enjoyed gardening and hummingbirds, and was a member of multiple bridge clubs. She and her husband retired to Wimberley, Texas in 1994. Judy was preceded in death by her parents Norval and Meralda Johnson, sister Faith McNaughton, and brother Chuck Johnson. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James Spitzer; sister Carol Manchester; children Eric Spitzer (Yvonne), Karen Rich (Jon), Laura Spitzer (Steve), and John Spitzer (Tasha); six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Judy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and she will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced.
