Herman Lee Rains

Herman Lee Rains, of Wimberley, entered his heavenly home on Friday, November 8, 2019, one day shy of his 92nd birthday.

Lee was born on November 9, 1927, in Comanche, Texas, the youngest of five children to Roy and Ruth Rains. His grandfather and father were Baptist preachers and his dad drove a team of mules during the week to make a living. Lee learned the value of hard work at an early age by shining shoes on the town square as well as delivering newspapers and working at a local hardware store. He played football in high school, served as Class President and was the editor of the very first Comanche High School Yearbook.

After graduating from Comanche High School, he attended Tarleton State University for one year. His education was interrupted when he was drafted into the Army during World War II which led to his military service in Japan. Upon returning, he attended the University of North Texas in Denton to earn his BBA degree in Accounting (he later took additional coursework at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth to enhance his career). After receiving his college degree, he went to work at Standard Oil of Indiana in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he met the love of his life, Wanda Holmes at the First Baptist Church. They married and were transferred to Fort Worth, Texas. He built two homes in Fort Worth – the first one being a “log cabin”!

Lee and Wanda had three children – Mark, Ginger and LeAnn. Soon after building their second home, he was transferred to Houston in 1971. He worked for Amoco as a supervisor of the Land Data Department until he retired at the age of 57. The couple then built their third home in Summer Mountain Ranch near Wimberley, Texas, where they retired. They were married for 55 years before Wanda’s passing in 2008.

In his younger days, his hobbies included fishing, bowling, wood working and working on automobiles – which he turned into “Car Care Ministries” at two churches. Throughout his life he was always involved in lay ministry in Baptist churches, from teaching Sunday School (for over 30 years!), Training Union, serving on committees and as a deacon. Until the end of his life, he considered the congregants of First Baptist Church Wimberley his family and looked forward to his weekly attendance.

Survivors include his children Mark Savage-Rains (Laura) of Lakeway and Virginia “Ginger” Lee Matula (Leon) of Karnes City; his grandchildren Angela Rains Peugnet (Forrest) of Houston, Christopher Rains of Austin, Leon Matula III of Karnes City, Kevin Lee Matula of San Antonio, and Bridgette Matula Mettlach (Joshua) of Corpus Christi; and, his great grandchildren Celeste, Brynn and Tallis Peugnet of Houston.

Lee is preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Holmes Rains; his daughter, LeAnn Rains; and his siblings, JB, Juanita, Oleta, and Roy.

Services will take place at First Baptist Church Wimberley (15951 Winters Mill Pkwy, Wimberley, TX 78676) on Saturday, November 30, 2019, at 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, “Memorial Contributions” may be made to the Carpenters Helpers of FBC Wimberley.
