After a long struggle with pancreatic cancer Dr. Cabler died peacefully at his home in Wimberley, Texas on September 12, 2018 with his loving wife of forty-four years, Ruthie, and their faithful dog, Crush, by his side.

Chris J. Cabler, M.D. was born in Houston, Texas on April 24, 1944 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The youngest of eight children, he was raised in Houston and attended Mt. Carmel High School graduating in 1962. He joined the USAF where he served as a medic at Hickam AFB in Hawaii. While there he became interested in the medical field and decided to pursue a career in medicine.

Upon discharge from the service he attended the University of Houston for pre-med studies and continued at The University of Texas Medical Branch where he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1972. He completed his Internship and Ophthalmology Residency in 1976 at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

He spent the next thirty-eight years in Houston practicing Ophthalmology, a field of medicine he dearly loved. He was a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Texas Ophthalmological Association and the Harris County Medical Society.

After retiring, Chris and Ruthie moved to their home of 29 years in Wimberley, where he continued to follow his favorite pursuits of gardening, traveling, reading and exploring the Texas Hill Country. He also took pleasure in spending time with his large extended Wimberley family and friends.

Immediately following Chris’s death was a spontaneous gathering of family and friends at Chris and Ruthie’s home on the Blanco to celebrate his life. A cypress tree was planted by the river in his honor.

Chris was predeceased by his parents Roy William Cabler and Marie Durham Cabler, and siblings Martha Ann Skinner, Roy William Cabler, Jr., Patricia Bludau, Gerald Charles Cabler and Richard Wynn Cabler. He is survived by his wife Ruth Ann Hoffman Cabler, sister Mary Ellen Plowden, brother Paul Stephen Cabler, and many, many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a time to be announced.
