On Monday, October 11 — the first federally recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day — the Indigenous Cultures Institute announced its plans for a Indigenous Cultures Center in Hays County.
The Rotary Club of Wimberley is happy to announce the winner and runner up of the 1st Danforth Rotary Loves Readers contest of the school year. The contest asked students to consider what elements make a book the perfect read for a vacation, then use as an example the student’s favorite book from this past summer break. The runner up with her entry about “The Hunger Games” was 7th grader, Emerson Grace Davis (right). Emerson received $50. The winner of a crisp $100 bill was 8th grader Kennedy Carson (left) with her entry about “The Summer I Turned Pretty.”
Symphony of Wimberley gave trick or treaters a bit of a preview of what is to come. On Saturday, they hosted Truck or Treat so some of the seniors living at the facility could watch all those dressed up for Halloween walk by. A few even came out to hand out candy themselves. The state legislature has finished redrawing the political maps, and Governor Greg Abbott is expected to sign the maps into law. If the maps hold up against legal challenges, new representation is on the way for the northwest half of Hays County including the Wimberley Valley and Dripping Springs. The changes, which in some cases split Hays County into two districts, impact the area’s state and congressional representation from both sides of the political spectrum.
The county-implemented Emergency Rental Assistance Program was created to assist those that need help with their rent and utility bills after the impact of COVID-19. Recently, the rental process has been sped up thanks to the Community Assistance Program.
The Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center offers free and confidential services to women, men and children who are victims of family violence, dating violence, sexual assault and child abuse. In 2020, they served a total of 2,023 victims of abuse and reached 15,036 community members.
The price of a gallon of gasoline tops $3 across much of the state, which is up more than $1.20 from a year ago, according to AAA. The average price for regular gas in Texas stood at $3.03 per gallon on Sunday as crude oil prices continue to creep up, closing above $80 per barrel. Crude oil price is one of a quartet of factors that influence the cost of gasoline, reported The Dallas Morning News. The cost of refining, distribution expenses and taxes also affect the price at the pump.

Proposition A on the ballot in Wimberley is a proposal to increase the maximum allowable ad valorem tax rate for Hays County Emergency Services District #4, which funds Wimberley Fire and Rescue. The current cap is five cents per $100 of taxable property value.
One of the Wimberley Lions Club’s favorite things to do is to give away money, so there were many happy members and grant recipients at the most recent meeting. Twenty-six nonprofit organizations were awarded monies to assist each with their unique missions in the Wimberley community. Lions Club First Vice-President, Amy Cox, who will be WLC President next year, was the emcee for the special event.
There are a lot of great things about the Lone Star State – particularly the Texas Hill Country – but throw in the community of Fischer, and its historic Fischer Hall, and you’ve got the makings of something special.
