WISD raises funds for Llano flooding

Wimberley knows what it is like to be hit with devastating flooding, and now Hill Country neighbors from Llano have experienced a similar tragedy.

The Llano River’s flood stage is around 10 feet, and the river crested at around 40 feet high in mid October due to torrential rains. The numbers are eerily similar to that of the Blanco River in 2015.

“We can totally empathize with what they are going through,” WISD Spokesperson Deyanira Rossell said. “There was an outpouring of requests from the community to do something, so we tried to help facilitate that. Everyone wanted to help.”

In times of disaster, it can be difficult to know the best way to help. Luckily, Wimberley had a good example to follow.

In 2015, Llano ISD raised money and donated it to Wimberley ISD for flood victims. It seemed like a fitting gesture to return the favor.

“We fundraised through all of the campuses and Wimberley Ace,” Rossell said. “People dropped off gift cards and cash. We presented the check to them before the football game on Friday night.”

Wimberley raised a little more than $7,000.

While the football game followed with a victory for the Texans, the real feat had already been accomplished during the pregame festivities.

“Thank you Wimberley High School for an unforgettable gesture of solidarity! We appreciate this monetary gift to the students and staff of LISD. Class Act!” Llano ISD said on Facebook after the game.
