Wimberley Seniors awarded PEC grant

The Wimberley Senior Citizens Activities Center, Inc. has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Pedernales Electric Cooperative to help fund a renovation program at the Wimberley Thrift Shoppe.

“This grant will be instrumental is replacing the aging air-conditioning unit in the Thrift Shoppe,” said Velma Morales, executive director of the Senior Center. “We’re grateful that PEC has recognized the Thrift Shoppe’s essential role.”

The Wimberley Thrift Shoppe, which helps fund many of the programs offered by the Wimberley Senior Center, has been slated for an extensive renovation to better serve its customers. The complex of buildings needs a number of improvements, including new flooring, paint and displays. “Funds raised at the Thrift Shoppe directly benefit local seniors,” Morales said. “By improving the building – and the shopping experience – we hope to be able to continue serving our community for many years to come.”

Although operations have been suspended due to the Safer at Home shutdown, the Wimberley Senior Center normally serves dozens of seniors who take part in an array of programs, including games, meetings and exercise classes. WSCAI also funds Circles of Friends, which offers enrichment programs for seniors suffering from memory care and respite care for their caregivers; and Wimberley on Wheels, which offers transportation to home-bound seniors. “We’re looking forward to reopening as soon as it’s safe,” Morales said.

Donations are still being accepted to help fund the Wimberley Thrift Shoppe renovations; for more information or to make a donation, visit www.WimberleySeniors.com.
