Wimberley Lions Club welcomes new president

Last month, the Wimberley Lions Club installed their new president and board members. The new president, Frank “Lion Boss” Curtis, will serve from 2023 through the end of June 2024.

A club member since 1989, Curtis said, “I am honored to be president of the Wimberley Lions Club. The Club is over 50 years old, and it has contributed so very much to this community.”

Recalling his initial involvement with the Lions, he said, “My sponsor, Barry Rhodes, who is still an active Lion, told me, ‘Frank, if you want to make things happen in Wimberley, then you have to join the Lions.’ He was correct. The Wimberley Lions Club is the chief agent of change in the Wimberley community.”

Curtis has served in various capacities in the WLC, serving as chair of the Program Committee for over 10 years until he became a Vice-President. He held yearlong terms acting as Third Vice-President, then a second vice-presidency, and finally being First Vice-President. He served on the Grants Committee, which benefits area non-profit organizations with grant monies, and on the Scholarship Committee, which awards scholarships to a selected group of local high school seniors. During Market Day season, which runs monthly from March to December, Curtis can be found volunteering at Concession 2 serving up food and drinks to the many visitors to Lions Field.

Referring to his top three goals as president for his one-year term, Curtis said, “First, I want to make the Wimberley community — and Texas — even more aware of how the Lions Club contributes to the people of Wimberley through our college scholarship program, our youth foreign exchange program, our vision screening program for youth and our annual grants program.”

Curtis’ second goal is to “increase the number of scholarships that the Lions are able to give from our present annual level of eight fouryear scholarships. I want to finance these through the contributions of the Market Day visitors, as well as monetary gifts from Lions members and other area donors.”

“I am so proud of all the Wimberley youth who we have helped to receive a college education through our scholarship program,” he continued. “Over the last 40 years, we’ve awarded approximately 350 scholarships. I just feel this is such a great gift, and makes this community a better place in which to live.”

His third goal for the year is to “increase the number of Lions in our Club and increase the number of community volunteers at Market Day.”

“Everything that the Lions Club has accomplished is due to the efforts of our members, both past and present,” Curtis concluded. “The motto of the Lions is ‘We Serve,’ and my responsibility is to carry that service and dedication forward and encourage our members and this community to make Wimberley a better place.”
