Wimberley Lions Club awards nine scholarships

The Wimberley Lions recently awarded nine scholarships to 2019 Wimberley graduates. These scholarships are collectively worth $68,000 for higher education. Lion President Richard Newsome noted, “This amount represents the Lions tradition of investing in the future and the community. The Wimberley Lions Club has been awarding scholarships for the past 38 years with more than $850,000 handed out over that period of time.”

All the scholarship winners attended Wimberley High School unless noted. Each of the scholarships honors a deceased Lion who contributed to the success of the Lions Club. A family representative of each deceased Lion was recognized and given a certificate when the scholarship was awarded to the winning student.

The Lion Jack Bourke Scholarship was awarded to Evan Mayhew who will attend Baylor University majoring in Business. The Lion Presley Chalmers Scholarship was awarded to Jillian Merritt who will attend the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Engineering with a Biomedical emphasis. The Lion Lee Coble Scholarship was awarded to Sydney Wright who will attend Texas A&M University majoring in Business.

The Lion Tommy “Van” Haley Scholarship was awarded to Alexandra Dishman who graduated from Katherine Anne Porter School and will attend the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Physics and Astronomy. The Lion Joe Heidenfelder Scholarship was awarded to Emma Fosdick who will attend The University of North Texas or Emerson College in Boston majoring in English. The Lion John Hogue Scholarship was awarded to Amelia Jordan who will attend the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, majoring in Illustration.

The Lion James Ben Pollack Scholarship was awarded to Daniel Eason who will attend Austin Community College majoring in Welding Technology. The John Seaman Scholarship was awarded to Eugenia Agobe who was home-schooled and will attend St. Edward’s University majoring in Political Science and Global Studies. The Lion Eva Short-Slider Scholarship was awarded to Anna Olmedo Barraco who will attend Texas A&M University majoring in Aerospace Engineering.

Lion Lane Hartstock noted at the presentation, “Our thanks go to the 20 members of our Scholarship Committee who have spent countless hours reviewing applications and conducting interviews. This year, more than ever, they have demonstrated a passion for understanding each applicant and how this scholarship will enrich their future.”
