Wimberley Lions Club awards local students $60,000 in scholarships

On Tuesday, May 17, the Wimberley Lions Club held its annual Scholarship Awards Night at the Wimberley Community Center. That evening, eight Wimberley High School Seniors were awarded with scholarships. Each scholarship is good for four years as long as students make their grades. The Wimberley Lions made seven academic scholarships worth $2,000 a year for four years and one technical scholarship worth $2,000 a year for two years.

Stephanie Gutierrez, who chaired the Scholarship Committee for the Lions, said, “After a two year absence, the Lion’s Club is excited to have our scholarship program active again. We are proud of our eight students who were selected this year and look forward to their college journey.”

Avery Branch received an academic scholarship. She will attend Abilene Christian University where she will major in Biology. Avery intends to become a dentist. Of note, Avery has interned 175 hours in local dental offices.

Makenzie Haston received an academic scholarship. She will attend Texas A&M University. After graduating from A&M, Makenzie intends to enlist in the United States Air Force. Makenzie was active in athletics and advanced placement classes at Wimberley High School.

Chloe Lewis received an academic scholarship. She will attend the University of Texas at Austin where she will major in Life Sciences and Health Care. Chloe was a Wimberley High cheerleader and active in the LEO Club and other voluntary endeavors.

Quinton Mendoza received an academic scholarship. He will be attending the University of Texas at Austin where he will be enrolled in the Honors Program in the School of Business. Quinton is a multi-year state champion in UIL activities and Salutatorian of the Senior Class.

Nancy Nava received an academic scholarship. She will attend Texas State University this fall where she intends to study Technology. Nancy was President of the Wimberley High LEO Club and volunteered many hours at the Lions Market Days.

William Norris received an academic scholarship. He will attend the University of Texas at Austin and plans to major in Civil Engineering. William was active in basketball and baseball and was a volunteer at Lions Market Days and with the Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Brenna Trudeau received an academic scholarship. She will attend Texas A&M University and intends to become a Physician Assistant in Dermatology. Brenna has been a cheerleader at Wimberley High and a competitive dancer.

Matthew Latham received a technical scholarship. He will be attending Texas State Technical College in Waco where he will seek a certificate in Diesel Mechanics. Matthew has been active in various ways using his hands and active in numerous Wimberley High School clubs.

In conclusion of the ceremony, Lions President Cade Wright said, “Our scholarship committee continues to be amazed by the quality of applicants who apply. This year was certainly no exception. This is the continuation of a long and proud tradition of the Wimberley Lions Club providing assistance to some of the best and brightest students in Wimberley. We thank each student and each family member here tonight and wish these scholarship winners all the best as they take this next step in their educational journey. It is so gratifying to see all the work that is done at Market Days by Lions and community volunteers result in these scholarships to these worthy students.”
