Wimberley ISD College, Career and Life Fair

There was a little revamp to the usual college fair at Wimberley High School, which is now in its ninth year. “We gave it a makeover to deal with the times,” WISD School board member Traci Maxwell said.

This is the ninth year, and although it has helped students planning on pursuing a higher education for the past eight years at the high school, making it more relevant to the students was the goal of the revamp. The name has been changed to College, Career and Life Fair.

“Generation Pave the Way in partnership with Academic Booster Club have now created a great event to build on. We will have colleges, universities, trade schools and certification programs as well as high school graduation to workforce options,” WISD Trustee Traci Maxwell said.

Instead of the generic “college fair,” the purpose of the fair was to include universities, technical trades, and jobs that can be started straight from high school.

On the afternoon of September 26, the high school cafeterias were turned into an exhibit hall for all the organizations, each one there to present the students numerous options for the rest of their working lives.

“There are over fifty higher learning institutions including technical schools here. There are also others like PEC and the plumbers…whatever they (the students) want to pursue, they can connect with those who match what their goals are,” WHS Principal Jason Valentine said.

“It is just wonderful,” said parent Julie Albini. “And the law enforcement being represented, was simply amazing.” Schools from other districts also attended, making an event that they can put on their calendars to look forward to and help their students.

“I love seeing our students eyes opened to their future options! This year, the CATE team in conjunction with Principal Valentine, the new WHS counseling staff of Wendy Grogan and Adriana Phillips; Generation Pave the Way worked to have additional offerings for the students. Certification and Tech schools were added in as well as several options for direct to workforce after graduation,” Maxwell said.

The two sponsors being Generation Pave the Way, and the Academic Booster Club.

Generation Pave the Way helps students who will be the first in their family to attend a University or institution of higher learning.

“The Academic Booster Club (ABC) always partners with us to provide snacks and assistance to make it the success it has become. I would encourage all WHS Parents to become members of ABC which supports our students and teachers in academic pursuits and to offer senior scholarships each year,” Maxwell said. They are a 501©(3) organization
