Voices at the Table continues Sunday

Voices at the Table, the community forum that explores race in Wimberley, will continue Sunday (Feb. 21) with a new program focusing on the experience of families of color in the area.

“This month’s guests will explore black, brown and blended families,” said Sandra Organ Solis, who helped create Voices at the Table. “Various families from our community will share their experiences and ways they see moving forward.”

Last month, more than 60 local residents were on the Zoom conversation to hear local writer and restaurant owner Linda Allen and Dr. Elvin Holt from Texas State University discuss the early settlement in the area and the experience of people of color in San Marcos and Wimberley in the past.

“I was heartened to see so many people come to be part of the discussion and sit at the table and learn some hard things, some things they hadn’t learned before about Wimberley and how it has been,” Sandra said. “It was a rich time for all of us.”

Sandra and her husband, Carlos Solis, started Voices at the Table as a follow-up to events that occurred last year that sparked community conversations of race relations in Wimberley.

“I am impressed with how inquisitive people have been about Voices at the Table and what positive feedback I have received from those willing to come to this listening space,” Sandra said. Voices at the Table is scheduled for each third Sunday of the month through June.

People who want to participate in this Sunday’s Zoom forum must register at https://table.yosoyx.net. “This includes those who registered for the last forum as well as any new people,” Sandra said. “Everyone is welcome.”

At that website they will also find a recording of the first gathering, as well as links to readings and videos that will help participants prepare for the discussions to come.
