Veteran’s Day is subdued but honors veterans

Although the pandemic has stopped many social gatherings, Veterans Day had to be celebrated. It is unlike Memorial Day, which remembers fallen heroes, Veterans Day honors all who been members of the U.S. military.

On the eleventh month’s eleventh day at the eleventh hour is when Veteran’s Day is officially celebrated, originally named Armistice Day commemorating when the First World War, known at that time as the “War to end all wars,” was officially over in 1918 and the peace treaty was signed.

In June of 1954, after WWII and the Korean War, Congress changed the name to Veteran’s Day. It is a lot different than Memorial Day. It is a national holiday that celebrates both living and past veterans. It is to time stop and reflect on their service. It is a time to say “thank you” to those who have served to protect our country, the United States of America.

The Wimberley VFW Post 6441 and members of the Sons of the American Revolution from across the state, celebrated at the EmilyAnn’s Veterans Plaza in a quiet, low-key celebration. The Revolutionary War Son’s uniforms and the Patrick Henry Fife and Drum Corps added to the colorful celebration.

The SAR raised flags to full-mast from the halfmast position and the sparse audience, mostly veterans and relatives, were present to honor veterans and their service. Thank you for your service.
