Texans leash the Bulldogs in season opener

After last season’s bitter loss to Crystal City in the Bi-District round of the playoffs, the Texans were frothing at the mouth to prove to everyone last season was fluke. After their season opening win at home against Burnet, the Texans proved at they are a force to be reckoned with.

Following five total touchdowns from quarterback Cooper McCollum, the Wimberley Texans blew out the Burnet Bulldogs 42-6.

After the first offensive drive was a three and out, the defense was able to score a safety following an overhead snap by the Burnet offense to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs responded with a 60-yard pass to put them in scoring position but the Texan defense held strong to force a field goal attempt. The Texan special teams’ unit was to force a miss field to keep the lead 2-0.

After both teams traded possessions, the Texans scored their first touchdown of the season following an Austin McCollum 56 yd pass to Christian Marshall to extend the lead 9-0.

Early in the second quarter, McCollum struck again running for a 45 yd touchdown run to put Wimberley up 16-0.

A fumble near the end of the quarter put the Bulldogs into scoring position, but again the Texan defense held firm to forced a punt and kept the score 16-0 heading in to half time.

McCollum used his feet for another touchdown in the third quarter running it in from 30-yards out to extend the Texan lead 22-0.

Following another stop on defense, McCollum scored again but this time finding Luke Wray on a 55-yard touchdown pass to add on to the lead 29-0.

Burnet finally scored by capitalizing on an interception for its only touchdown of the night to make the score 29-6 to end the third.

Though it looked like Burnet was going to stage a comeback, all hopes were put to rest when McCollum scored his third rushing touchdown of the night. Jake Milam added the final touchdown of the game to put a bow on the 42-6 victory.

For the offense, Cooper McCollum was the workhorse going 6-13 for 143 yards passing and two touchdowns while running for 131 yards and three touchdowns. Along with Moses Wray’s 86 yards rushing, the Texans piled 248 yards on the ground adding to the 391 yards of offense.

“We are not asking him (McCollum) to win ballgames.” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said after the game. “We are asking him to execute the offense.”

The defense, on the other hand, performed well as they stopped the Burnet offense in the RedZone from scoring and held the Bulldogs to only 6 points.

“We gave up one long pass early in the game,” Warren said. “But other than that, we didn’t give up anything…I really like that side of the ball and the strides that they are making.”
