Stone Skipping Contest is back

The annual World Championship Stone Skipping Contest is back for 2018 at The Back Porch on Sunday, August 12.

“A big part of the mission of The Back Porch is to preserve old Wimberley,” owner Jay Bachman said. “I can’t think of any better way to do that. Last year’s competition was the most Wimberley day I’ve had since I’ve lived here. It was just perfect.”

Cypress Creek will be open for swimming starting at 8 a.m. with the kitchen opening at 11 a.m. The contest starts at 3 p.m. There are categories for all ages of competition.

“You can do your three skips at pretty much any time during the day,” Bachman said. “ You can always come back and try again. The most exciting time is when the sun in starting to set and the lake turns to glass and the wind stops. That is when the big ones start.”

Decades ago, the sanctioned world championship contest was held in this exact location. Last year, one of Wimberley’s skippers beat the previous record for this location. Owen Johnson’s 30 skips last year beat the record of Jerry McGee, who founded the competition, by one skip from nearly 20 years ago.

The event will run from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. with live bands performing all day including Laura Lee Inhoff, Humdingers, Ella Reid and Texas Renegade.
