St. Stephens to host roadside cleanup

The St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Roadside Cleanup Committee has scheduled its first 2019 cleanup day for Saturday, March 23 beginning from 7-8 a.m. at the MacArthur Fellowship Hall & Courtyard, 6000 FM 3237.

According to committee member Becki Smith, “we hope to have a crew of about 20 adults to assist in the process. The time commitment won’t exceed two hours.” _

The State of Texas has partnered with St. Stephens for over a dozen years to maintain a five-mile stretch of FM 3237 that includes the Episcopal church, school and cemetery. The committee is reaching out to others that reside from Hays City Store to Lone Man Creek Bridge to pitch in. Everyone has a vested interest in keeping our highways as pristine as possible.

Silver Ingots. Finders Keepers!

Some observant and lucky volunteers may even stumble onto one of several one-ounce silver ingots, perhaps resting under roadside refuse.

The Cleanup Committee, consisting of Becki and Jon Smith, Michael Marcionetti and Todd Schmidt takes a safety-first approach. Reflective vests, drinking water and pickup sticks are provided. Texas DOT provides safety guidelines at www.txdot.gov/inside-txdot/get-involved/volunteer/adopt-a-highway/safety-tips.html.

The Texas Adopt-a-Highway program began in 1963 as the first of its kind anywhere in the United States. It has since spread around the country and around the world.

Volunteers are always needed to make the work go faster. For more information, email [email protected].
