Scott Raven named county fire marshal

Hays County has a new fire marshal.

Scott Raven, former head of the Park Rangers for the city of San Marcos, was sworn in by County Judge Ruben Becerra Tuesday after a unanimous vote by the commissioners court to approve him.

Raven was the top candidate to emerge from a field of potential replacements for Clint Browning, who stepped down as fire marshal in October of last year, the county’s Director of Emergency Management Kharley Smith told the court.

Smith said she was “excited and proud” to recommend Raven for the position “without any reservation.”

She said an interview was one step in the four-month selection process that also included scoring for certification, experience, supervisory skills and character references. Several interviews were conducted, she said.

Pct. 2 Commissioner Mark Jones praised Smith for her diligence in helping to recommend a candidate. “She has done a good job,” he said.

County Judge Ruben Becerra called Raven and his wife to the podium where he was sworn into the office, after which loud applause filled the courtroom.

Browning, who had only been in the job for six months, resigned to pursue other projects, he said in a letter to Jones.
