Robyn Ludwick and Friends benefit for Martha Knies Park

Being cooped up is not the easiest thing to do. But Saturday night December 5, from 7 to 8 p.m. there is a local benefit to and for the community. Local artist Robyn Ludwick, and a host of her friends, will be streaming online a live but virtual performance from the Devil’s Backbone Tavern.

This safe, post Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas hour of music is will be for the newly named Martha Knies Community Park and the acquisition of a statue called, “Painting Music” to be the centerpiece of the park. The statue was hand picked by Martha to grace the park.

Martha Knies is the founder of Keep Wimberley Beautiful and has been at the forefront of doing just that, keeping Wimberley beautiful with bridge holiday displays, spring wildflowers and keeping the highways free from trash.

Robyn Ludwick is a long time resident and appreciates and loves Wimberley. “I’ve been her 19 years and have raised two kids… I have a role and connection to the community and with a family and business in this town it’s easier to step up,” Ludwick said. “It’s a nonprofit… and the fundraising is the perfect mission for something that means so much to us.” She continued.

“It’s an absolutely beautiful cause…three weeks, this will be tough to pull off, but what is the most effective way to do it in a pandemic? Raise money for a beautiful spot in Wimberley, at the Devil’s Backbone Tavern and Dance Hall.” The concert will be virtual, of course.

So she asked a couple of friends and locals to help, like the emcee, noted Wimberley author and disc jockey Joe Nick Patoski. Other artists set to appear are: Slaid Cleaves, Susan Gibson, Chris & Adam Carroll and Sam Downing

“I knew there were so many artist in Wimberley who would love to do it,” she said. “When I asked if they would like to do it, they said of course, we love Wimberley and the community.”

Helping the Memorial Day Flood victims and the devastated Wimberley community in 2015, Ludwick helped raise funds for the valley with the “Flood of Love” concert benefit. She also wrote and recorded a song about the flood, “Wimberley Strong,” with the background singers being the students of Jacobs Well Elementary.

Growing up in the area and being crowded out of the growing South Austin, she and her husband had a decision to make about their family. “I’ve always wanted to move here. It’s a family town that digs music on the side. It gives the kids a good chance on life,” she said.

Help promote a free concert: a virtual live-streamed performance by Wimberley’s own musicians Robyn Ludwick, Slaid Cleaves, Susan Gibson, Chris & Adam Carroll and Sam Downing.

Joe Nick Patoski will emcee the show from the Devil’s Backbone Tavern between 7-8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5.
