Respite for local first responders

Woodcreek, Camp Young Judaea offer to help the front lines

The city of Woodcreek is working with Camp Young Judaea to offer local first responders a place for respite, and safe self-quarantining, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The city, with its resident Camp Young Judaea, recognized the lack of a facility to offer these healthy workers a safe place to spend time away from their families, have meals and receive necessary respite care in their own hometown, at no cost, during this pandemic,” a press release from the city of Woodcreek said. “Camp Young Judaea stepped forward to offer its facilities to fulfill this need and will begin to offer these services to the Wimberley Valley, beginning Wednesday, April 15th, during this time of concern for the welfare of those in most danger during this COVID-19 pandemic.”

As first responders can come in contact with patients suspected of having COVID-19, many choose to self-quarantine away from their own families.

“I am extremely grateful for the city of Woodcreek for thinking of the safety of the first responders and trying to find a place for us to quarantine, should we need, away from our families or other first responders,” Ken Strange, director of Wimberley EMS, said.

There are facilities in the area that have worked with first responders for such needs, but this will be the first in the Wimberley Valley.

“The city of Woodcreek and Camp Young Judaea will provide a safe space of respite for healthy first responders and essential personnel in the Wimberley Valley with sleeping quarters and meals,” the press release said. “Also included will be healthy family members or others who reside with first responders or essential personnel who are in quarantine. In addition, family members of Woodcreek residents who are in quarantine will be welcome.”

“Mayor Gloria Whitehead has worked tirelessly with Camp Young Judaea Director of Operations Danny Ross, City Manager Brenton Lewis, City Council Member Vicki Alvord, City Attorney Bud Wymore, Wimberley EMS Director Ken Strange, and Dr. Eric Price to make this service available. Council Member Alvord will be the contact for information.”

CYJ is a place where kids can be kids, where lifelong friendships are born, where campers can be themselves and know they belong.
