Remember the rules of the road when walking

It seems like everybody has been stuck inside for the last few months, but the lack of places to go and things to do has forced people to find new ways to get exercise.

“We’ve seen a lot more walkers on the streets lately,” Woodcreek City Administrator Brenton Lewis said. “We want to see them out on the street, but we also want them to be safe.”

In a conference call with Woodcreek Mayor Gloria Whitehead, the city of Woodcreek reminded pedestrians and bicyclists that there are safe ways to share the roadway.

“What has happened is we have had several citizens that are concerned about the pedestrians not following the basic requirements,” Lewis said. “Make sure you can see the eyes of the driver when you are walking. That means walk on the left side of the road. We also have concerns that, since we have a lot more walkers out and many of them have dogs that are on a long leash. That can still allow dogs to run out in front of cars so keep a shorter leash. Also, bicyclists need to follow the laws of the state. Stop at stop signs.”

Woodcreek is also reminding residents that there are city ordinances requiring that driving a golf cart on city streets requires a valid drivers license.

“Every summer, when school gets out, the youth end up in their golf carts, and we want to remind people that under our current code you have to be a licensed driver,” Lewis said. “It is legal to drive on the streets. It is just not legal in Woodcreek without a license… We want to remind everybody that the golf course is private property. When there is play going on out there, it is dangerous to be out there on the course if you are not playing golf.”

Safety First + Rules of the Road

Pedestrians

- Walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.

- Always cross at intersections, look left, right and repeat before proceeding.

- Keep dogs on short leashes so they aren't in traffic lanes.

Bicyclists

- Wear a helmet.

- Follow the same rules as drivers and obey all traffic laws. Stop at stop signs, use proper turn signals and stop signals.

- Ride near the edge of the pavement, traveling in the same direction as traffic.

- Wear light colored clothing so it's easier for drivers to see you.

Motorized Carts and Golf Course

- You must have a valid driver's license to operate a motorized cart in Woodcreek.

- Obey the same rules as car drivers.

- Be aware that the golf course is private property. It can be dangerous to be on the golf course when golf balls are being hit.
