New Wimberley council sworn in

The Wimberley City Council welcomed two new members and a new mayor this weekend.

Gina Fulkerson was sworn in as the new mayor and Teresa Shell and Jim Chiles were sworn in as council members for Place Two and Place Four.

There was no city election this year as all three seats were uncontested.

In the last council meeting for the three outgoing members, each took a moment to reflect on their time serving the city.

Mayor Susan Jaggers completed one term of two years with the city of Wimberley.

“I know I rubbed a few edges over the last two years,” Jaggers said. “I am not necessarily a politician at all. It is opening my eyes that I need to stay out of politics. But I got all my training through the military and they are not politicians either. So thank you for bearing with me… I am sure you are going to have an enjoyable next two years with Gina and the other council members. I wish y’all the best.”

Councilmember Craig Fore completed two terms of two years each with the city of Wimberley.

“I sat down a few days ago going over the things that I think we have accomplished over the last four years,” Fore said. “(I) thought about all the people we have worked with on all the different councils and what a privilege it has been and an honor to work for the city and work with all these fine people. It really comes down to one thing. It comes from the support from everybody, and I appreciate all that, but I couldn’t have done any of this without my wife. Because it is not about just one person when you are serving on the council. It really affects your whole family.”

Councilmember Gary Barchfeld completed two terms of two years each with the city of Wimberley.

“My lovely wife has been behind me the entire time,” Barchfeld said. “I would like to thank her for her support. I would like to thank the constituents who voted for us and I hope that we did justice. I would like to thank all the friends who supported us, volunteered with us. We couldn’t have done it without. This is a volunteer group. With a recent accident, we have gotten good wishes, prayers and warm thoughts from all over the community, and I greatly appreciate that. And look, relative to this council, I think this council worked very well together. I think the six of us have been able to accomplish a lot in a year. As I look at it we are normally at a 4-1 to 5-0 vote, so we are all thinking the same for the betterment of our community. It has been a pleasure to work with all of you. It has been a pleasure to work with the staff and I just thank everybody.”

Mayor Pro Tem Rebecca Minnick, who was selected by the new council to continue to serve as Mayor Pro Tem, thanked the outgoing council members.

“I am sure it is bitter sweet for you all,” Minnick said. “On behalf of the three council members who are continuing on and also the citizens of Wimberley, I’d like to acknowledge Councilmember Fore and Councilmember Barchfeld for their four years of service to the city and to Mayor Susan Jaggers for her two-year term. As I look back on the votes, and the great majority of discussions we’ve had this past year that I have been on, I believe we have worked well together on issues that are important to our town and I believe we have accomplished some things over the past year. I thank both council members Fore and Barchfeld for their responsiveness to their constituents and for their good humor as we’ve gone about our duties. Mayor Jaggers I have appreciated your candor that you have brought to our meetings.”

Hays County Justice of the Peace Andrew Cable swore in the new council on Friday in an online Zoom meeting.
