Meadows Center to have Summer Academy classes for K-12 children
Are you looking for fun and educational activities to do with your children this summer? Are your children interested in science and the great outdoors? Registration is now open for The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment’s Summer Academy Series, where children from K-12th grade can explore nature, science and ecology in an outdoor learning environment.
Classes take place once a month from May to August. Each class will include a guided glass-bottom boat tour, an interpretive tour of the Discovery Hall aquaria and exhibits as well as interactive themed activities that teach students the interconnections between all living things and water.
“The Summer Academy series is perfect for smaller groups and families who cannot meet the 15-person minimum for a field trip at Spring Lake,” Education Manager Meagan Lobban said. “This series will give kids of all ages an opportunity to build a personal connection to the outdoors and to learn about nature, while enjoying The Meadows Center’s exhibits and programs.”
The 2019 Summer Academy series schedule is as follows:
May 28 - Introduction to Birds: Where do birds live and what do they look for in a habitat? Students will learn about bird migration as well as which birds can be found at Spring Lake.
June 18 - Endangered Species: Did you know that Spring lake is home to eight threatened and endangered species? Students will learn about the difference between threatened and endangered species and view the unique habitat that these species occupy from a glass-bottom boat.
July 9 - Benefits of Living with Plants: Have you ever wondered what role plants play in our ecosystem? Students will learn about the benefits of living with plants and see a variety of plants in different habitats; wetlands, grass lands, and aquatic.
August 6 - Living in a Watershed: Everyone lives in a watershed, but do you know your watershed address? Students will learn what a watershed is, how humans impact watersheds and how to protect them.

Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for outdoor weather and wear sturdy shoes. Visitors are required to display a permit on their vehicle in the Meadows Center parking lot. One-day temporary permits are available for $3 at the kiosk located near the ticket booth.
