Katherine Anne Porter sheds new light

It is that time of year again in Wimberley; time to go back to school. College kids to pre-K will soon be off to their learning center of choice to begin the new school year of 2018-2019.

KAPS or the Katherine Ann Porter is a charter school. Founded in 1998 was established “to nurture student’s interests, foster an appreciation for learning, enhance community responsibility, and to advance peace and human rights,” according to their website.

The free charter high school, in the words of Katherine Anne Porter, that “knowledge of great art and great thought is a good in itself, not to be missed for anything.”

The school was physically busy this summer with getting as new roof. The leaky old one was replaced and in doing so it was re-discovered that the roof had skylights.

“The skylights were covered over by roofing material. We got new skylights and in came the natural light. It’s a big deal for us…it will also help with the climate control,” Amy Crowell, KAPS Manager of Development & Communications said.

This year’s plan is to also put together a “Maker’s Space” which will be able to be used by local artists of all sorts.

“It will be a tinkering space for both the teacher and students for the art class. We’re moving the kilns outside for more space for pottery. We’re also adding woodworking and really all subjects can use the space. Including every year’s project where classes build a catapult.” She continued. “Maker’s space is shared space. Community members can possibly rent space for their projects.

Classes at KAPS returned on August 6 for the school year.
