Cyclamen

We are all charmed by the beauty and pop of color by the seasonal poinsettias this time of year. However, another Christmas favorite is the cyclamen. Cyclamens in full bloom come in sizes ranging from the four inch pots with 6” or smaller plants to the more standard 12” size plants. There is even a tiny mite series. Colors range from a lush red to salmon, lavender, silver marbled, pink and a few others.

Some cyclamens have scented flowers. Compact growth, attractive, variegated foliage, and beautiful, swept back flowers make cyclamen a favorite. For some reason, this is the first season I have ever had one. It has been blooming beautifully for several weeks and I have fallen in love with it.

Directions for keeping it beautiful include keeping it in bright light but away from direct sunlight. Placing the pot on a pebbled tray and using the immersion method for watering are also recommended. Too much warmth, incorrect watering, (never let water stand on the crown), and dry air are common causes for the plant to have a short flowering period. Feeding cyclamen will also help keep the plant blooming.

Most cyclamens are consigned to the dust bin after their blooming period, but with proper care, they can be kept blooming indoors for several months and then return for a colorful blooming season the following winter.
