City park named after Martha Knies

After decades of service to both the city of Wimberley and the community as a whole, Martha Knies now has a park named after her in Wimberley.

The pocket park on the Wimberley Square that serves as the trailhead of the Cypress Creek Nature Trail and Preserve has been renamed Martha Knies Community Park by the Wimberley City Council.

“Martha embodies what it means to be a true community leader and civil servant,” Councilmember Christine Byrne said. “As one of our first council members, she was instrumental in securing land for our first public park and preserve. As the founder of Keep Wimberley Beautiful she has dedicated years to help maintain and care for the pocket park above the bluff, the trail head for the Cypress Creek Nature Trail and Preserve. She has provided exceptional service to our community and has inspired participation in caring for our community spaces.”

Knies was elected to serve on the first Wimberley City Council in 2000 and was re-elected for another two years in 2001. According to a resolution passed in 2003 by the city council thanking Knies for her service, she was “instrumental in the creation of the Cypress Creek Nature Trail” and she was on the council when the property was acquired by the city.

Knies is also the founder of Keep Wimberley Beautiful and has written weekly columns for decades in the Wimberley View, along with other members of the organization, teaching locals how to help beautify the area. She has dedicated countless hours to doing so herself.

“When you name something after somebody, that is very serious,” Stephanie Nestlerode, a local resident who spoke in favor of re-naming the park, said. “I feel like if you have lived in a small town for 30 years that small town has vetted you up one side and down the other. After 30 years, the impact she has had has been tremendous… She exemplifies what you want in a civic citizen.”

Knies was nearly speechless when informed of the naming of the park but said she was tremendously honored by the designation.
